Ok please don't flame me. I feel bad enough!

Dog had all her vaccinations as a pup including kennel cough and a booster the year after. I was then very unwell and they lapsed. I spoke to the vet about this and was told not to worry that it was not an issue and that the belief was that some vets didn't believe they needed doing every year anyway. She's even been in for surgery during this time. She's been in the kennels in that time. Both were happy and aware of jab dates.

Anyway went today to a new vet as we were in a different area for her boosters and they wouldn't do it and started again with the puppy vaccinations from scratch. So she's got to go back in two weeks for her second jab. Ive been told she's not been covered :(

She's actually booked in the kennels which we have had to cancel obviously.

But I'm presuming she will have to stay in the garden again now until after her second jab and she can't go out.
How long after the second jab do we wait please?
Why do different vets have such opposing views on this ?

How long is it since the vaccinations were done?

My dog gets the L4 every year but that is because it has to be yearly. However, not everyone has the L4 depending on whether they feel the risk is high.

He also has the KC each year but again lots of people don't have that one either although most kennels and daycare around here won't take them without it.

For the other ones that he had as a puppy I think the booster is only every three years.

It's coming up to three years.
Does that mean she is safe for her walks still?
Or does the fact that she's had the jab she has today (first of the puppy ones) mean that she can't.
She's actually had the KC one already.

When I tell people that yearly boosters are not necessary (except Lepto) they nearly all express surprise because, unless you ask, the vet will go on giving unnecessary boosters. It would help if there was any consensus between vets, instead of them all having different ideas about vaccinations, neutering and diet.

Honestly I don't know because it sounds like this vet thinks you aren't covered hence starting again from scratch.

I do remember there were different brands and schedules with the puppy vaccinations depending which one your vet did. Maybe it's something to do with that.

No she does not have to be in the garden until the next jabs.

You could have her titre tested and she if she evens need more vaccinations tbh

She will not be covered for Lepto or kennel cough but kennel cough is a bit hit and miss anyway but you will need it for kennelling usually.

I'm probably going to use the wrong terminology but I think you can have them titred (?) to check immunity.

I don't have all vaccines boosted every year.

My dogs (a labrador and a cocker spaniel) have the leptospirosis vaccine every year as that is the one where the immunity tails off particularly quickly. The rest are done every couple of years. That is what my vet recommends, saying that they mostly aren't necessary every single year.

We give lepto but not 4. Yearly.
Not all vaccinations need giving yearly.
Some people only give puppy vaccines and some only puppy and boosters. I think some give none at all.
You can titre test but not for lepto.
So overall? It’s clear as mud really. But all vets have their own policy.

I said this to the vet today and she told me this was a wide misconception, that she wished they would change the name of it as dogs are as likely to catch it from walking where an infected dog has as they are to in kennels.

Agirlhasnoname, when I say that they only have the KC vaccine if going into kennels, in reality they have needed to go into kennels about once a year, so they have often had it annually.

I'm aware that they can catch KC on contact with other dogs, and not always in kennels. However, I am dubious about the efficacy of the vaccine. It only protects against a certain number of strains of KC. By no means all.

Kennel cough is nothing to do with kennels. It is caught by contact with other dogs. So at the park, shows or kennel or training. It’s like the flu vaccine in humans though. Only protects against certain strains. They also shed the vaccine for a period after it is given.

To be honest, I mainly give the KC vaccine because most kennels insist on it, and may ask to see the vaccination certificate.

We don’t use kennels. She stays with her Wolfie Godmother if we go away.

I hate putting them in kennels. I don't have many other options though if we have to go away and can't take them with us.

I hate it even more now that they are old (14 and 13) for obvious reasons too hard to discuss.

I only do it when I really have to, and I am tearful every time.

Please don’t think my post was meant to make you feel guilty @Topseyt. It really really wasn’t.
We have issues in that Wolfie girl is a bit nervous of strangers and (as a wolfhound) too bloody big for most kennels. She’s also my first dog, is raw fed and a breed that can be prone to stuff like bloat and pneumonia. So I worry. A lot.

My cockapoo has only had her puppy injections - I was under impression the others weren't necessary. She's two?

Have you had titre testing? What does your vet say Buttercup?

BiteyDog got a mild form of KC after being admitted to the vets. He is also around lots of dogs at daycare and training and as he has no reactions to the vaccination it we get it each year and in an emergency if we had to use kennels we could straight away as there is often a 2 week period where they won't take them after the vaccine.

We have had no reactions to L4 and BiteyDog goes wading in the most disgusting rat infested lakes and swampy mud which are also frequented with cattle so again that makes sense for us.

That leaves the boosters for the other typical vaccinations which it sounds like some vets still think they should be done yearly then from what has been said by PP. I know we don't and I am sure my vet said three years.

She does not need the puppy vaccinations again. I would not take her back for the second lot.

She needs DHP every three years and Pi and L every year (supposedly they may only be effective for six months) if you follow most manufactures guidelines. I would also ask the vet who manufactures the brand being used, Nobivac are who I come across the most and they definitely say only three yearly fro DHP. Usually Pi comes as part the same vaccination of it still did a few years ago.

There are studies by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association showing immunity still present seven years post vaccination. One of my dogs had an immune problem and reacts to vaccinations and I am very comfortable in my stance on vaccinations for dogs. I don't give L unless I have dogs going to areas I would expect them to be at risk, but part of that is because one of mine reacts especially badly to Lepto. He's never had the new one because it's not worth the gamble.

I would have to as if she goes into kennels it will look like her jabs are incomplete. Are the second puppy jabs different from the first or a booster. I can't remember!

She doesn't see a vet. I buy Bravecto over the counter from the vet but don't see them. She hasn't seen a vet since she was 3 months old. I figured she only goes if there's a problem?!

If you don’t want to vaccinate you can titre test and if they show your dog is currently protected you can have the vet sign to confirm this and should be good enough for kennels. The reason you get differences in opinion is that if your vet recommends anything other than what the manufacturer advises they are opening themselves up to problems if your dog did become ill. Many vets are happy to not adhere to the strict manufacturers guidelines, but for the rest its more than their jobs worth so why take the risk, they’ll advise to restart the vaccines as per the instructions. My dogs get DHP every 3 years and L4/Pi every year as we are rural.

I would not go back to this vet.
