Thoughts on this (whippet anaesthetic)

Our whippet has somehow managed to cut himself on the inside of his back leg. Because of where it is, I didn’t actually see the cut until last night. And I think he must have done it on Friday

Took him to the PAH vet this morning (our usual vet is closed) and he had antibiotic and anti inflammatory injections. The vet said it was a tough call in terms of leaving it to heal on its own, or anaesthetising him, cleaning out the wound and stitching it. I’m worried about anaesthetising him and will take him to our vet tomorrow for a second opinion.

Would be great to hear thoughts / experiences on this or if there are any other options for him. Needless to say I feel awful that it took me so long to see it.

Poor doggy! Don’t beat yourself up. It’s can’t be massive or have bled much or you would have known.
How long/deep is it? Has it scabbed over?

With modern anaesthetic there is no greater risk anaesthetising a sight hound than any other breed.

It’s only an inch long, but deep. Almost like a gouge - I think he must have caught it jumping over logs. It looks sort of congealed rather than scabbed if that makes sense?

I am completely unqualified (unlike a PP!) but I’m guessing the question is whether it’s going to close without stitches or gape?

The vet said it would heal eventually, but the stitches would obviously accelerate the process and reduce the risk of infection I think.

I’m hoping that our own vet will be clearer about options tomorrow, I left today’s consultation a bit confused.

Good luck tomorrow. If it’s not an emergency situation then I would rather see our usual vet.
