Just got a seven month old Lab - cats and kids

Hiya
We have just got a 7 month old black lab - from a family who didn't have time for him. We've only had him for three days so far.
Bit of background info: We have two young children 3 and 5 (he had lived with four children around the same age). He is obviously frightening my kids when he jumps up so they are staying away but have given him a stroke when hes calm.
Whats the best way to train him not to jump up? Treats and praise?
I was told he'd had some training which he does seem to have had - with sitting and has slept over night in his crate no problem - im trying to work on getting him going in by himself (through treats) .
Also have two housecats so any good tips with that would be great. They are currently upstairs and i have a stairgate at bottom of stairs. But open it during night so they can come down (as the dog is in his crate). They have seen each other - he barked and had a waggy tail. He didn't live with other cats but as he's only young I thought we could make it work. My cats are used to my mams jack russell coming round but obviously he's a much bigger dog! I also have him on a lead in the house at the moment.
Any tips/ advice would be great! x
