Tell me your dogs’ routines

Just wondering what other people do with their dogs all day and if you have set routines etc. Thanks!

Not much help OP as I don't have set routines as sometimes it work day, sometimes it's daycare day and then at weekends it completely different. This also helps as he doesn't expect things to happen and therefore doesn't get upset if we jig times about.

Thanks BiteyShark - I mean basics like timings and number of feeds, walks, play, training, bed etc. I couldn’t possibly have the same routine every day but could do with an idea of what others do. It’s our first dog and he’s now 9 months and have been very much whatever whenever.

From age of 6 months 2 feeds a day, in the morning and evening. Snacks throughout the day when training or after a bout of high energy exercise.

When he is at daycare he gets two one hour walks a day (he's 14 months) then nothing with me except a quick toilet break walk in the morning. When he isn't at daycare he gets around 30 mins of non stop chasing and hunting a ball in the morning, in the evening either the same or more likely a bit of agility or ball chasing in the garden.

Every few weeks formal gun dog obedience training and agility.

Play, not so much now as he wants to play ball with me rather than any other play.

Bed time around 6-7 pm he takes himself off to one of his beds and goes to sleep. We have to wake him for his last pee of the night around 11.

Apart from breakfast at 7 and dinner at 7, we don't have a routine. Puppies get more meals and spend time on various skills depending on their age, the big dogs get one or more walks depending on what is going on

My dog is a year old now and our days do vary but generally he has two meals a day - about 7.30am and 4.30pm. I take him out to the park before work where he usually has a good run around and play with various doggie friends (about 45mins) then Mon-Weds I drop him off at my parents. My dad will take him out late afternoon for a 30min walk then drop him home at about 3pm and we're home by about 4ish. Its then playtime and in and out of the garden until about 7.30pm when he takes himself off to bed. At about 10ish I will take him out for a final wee and often cant wake him so lift him up and deposit him in the garden where he pees on command. Then its back to bed after a couple of biscuits. He sleeps in the kitchen. I work from home on Thurs and Fridays but the basic, food, walks etc remain the same.

Walk, poop, pee, medication, breakfast, sleep, hump my leg, treat/chew, sleep, walk, medication, dinner, very rough very loud game on the floor with DH, hump my leg, chew, final pee, bedtime.

Weekdays: Walk first thing in morning, breakfast, walk at lunch (either by me or dog walker) lunch, dinner at 5pm-ish then a walk about 6pm.

Weekends: breakfast about 7am, walk around 9/10.Lunch about 12-1. Afternoon walk, dinner about 5/6 then another walk in the evening at some point.

Doesn't play as is boring, she gets stuffed kongs, peanut butter in things to keep her amused. She likes to destroy stuffed toys so she gets them now and again.

On a work day:

7am - breakfast
7:30 - let out for a wee

I leave for work.

12:30 - half hour walk (I go back on lunch)

I go back to work.

5:30 - half hour to hour walk.
7ish - dinner.

Cuddle on the sofa until bed. He either sleeps with me or in the living room on the sofa. Tried bringing him to work with me but he hates it, he's happiest at home with his home comforts!

You get the gist

We are a little like Bitey as it depends on work etc as to how the day unfolds. DH is home based but does some onsite visits that he takes DDog along to (and usually finds some wonderful park or common to have a good walk). I work either from home or the office and for the days we both need to be out of the house he goes to Day care.

We do have a kind of routine in that we are up at 6 for breakfast Monday to Friday to allow for tummy settling (DDog) before the first walk and off lead run of the day (usually both of us) Then it is either Daycare, onsite visits or at home with one or the other of us. Whoever is at home walks again ( an hour or so) and training about noon. If out with DH see above!

DH collects DSD from school at 3.15 and they have a shorter walk followed by tea at 4.30. If I'm at home I may take him out instead or as well as.
Playtime and training in the evening, off lead run and/ or walk and snuggles until bed time

Weekends we do mostly the same but get up an hour or so later and the day time walks are longer (we are keen walkers). He goes nearly everywhere with us including to family and friends when possible but is great when left for a couple of hours.

Once every couple of weeks we go to the vets and sit for half an hour watching the world go by (he missed out on some key socialisation when younger) as this is part of his training.

Dog is 1 and a springer/collie cross.

Forgot to say he goes out for his last wee anywhere from 9:30pm to 12am, depending on how tired I am.

Oops a bit long!!

Short walk at 6:30am (very reluctantly indeed on her part!!), then she takes her dentastick back to bed with her and goes back to sleep. Surfaces when I leave the house at 8, and eats said dentastick, then is picked up at 8:30am by the dog sitter, and has breakfast there. 2 hour long walk at lunchtime with the dog sitter, then she’s dropped home at 5:30pm when I get home too, with DS. They have a crazy 10 minutes of barking/shrieking at each other enthusiastically, then she sits under the high chair whilst DS has supper so she can hoover all the bits he drops. I give her her supper after this but she’s usually too full to eat it. She sleeps off the food for a few hours then it’s a quick walk around 8:30, before she curls up on the sofa with us for the evening. We take her out one last time right before bed.

Up, walk, feed, chase cat all day, loses cat, panicks cause can't find cat, finds cat, chases cat, walk, feed and bed (while watching the cat)

Meals are about 8 am and pm, drugs are 8, 4 and 12 (not in most people's routine to be fair, lol) he goes out for a pee after breakfast and after the last lot of drugs and everything else is pretty much as and when... depends what I'm doing, the weather, what mood he's in...

Our pup is only 4 months old but..
5:30 (?!) barks for pee, sometimes poop
Back to bed
6:15 barks again, usually for attention, sent back to sleep
6:35 barks again, this time we get up...
7:30 breakfast then in and out of garden
8 - naps until school run
9 - home to garden and mooch about
10:30 - 1 hour walk/sniff
11:30/12 - play/garden/mooch
12:30 - lunch then settled and left for 1-1.5 hours whilst DH goes to work or at weekend we all go out for some dog free time
2pm - garden - training/play
3pm - school run
4pm - nap
5:30 - dinner then training/cuddles
6:30 - naps throughout evening with some training of wide awake until
8:30 - walk round block, garden play
9:00-10:00 - naps and settle for the night
.... repeat.

Weekdays:
Short comfort walk and breakfast before work
Long walk after work - in the summer evenings it's around a park, at this time of year it's about 45 mins non stop fetch plus time getting there and back (probably 90 mins total)
Dinner
Various cuddles / playing / training etc until bedtime
Short comfort walk at about 11pm
Sleep in bed

One night a week the long walk is swapped for a training class

Weekends
Let out in the garden first thing
Long walk (typically 3 hours or so) starting late morning
Elongated snooze
Cuddles, training, play etc as appropriate
Bed

6am Walk about 40mins
Dental stick for breakfast
Play with dd before school
Sleep on sofa till 12 if dh home or 2 if I am working
Walk about 1-2 hours
3pm dinner!
Snooze
A little play and some kind of chew or kong
Cuddles on sofa
6pm bedtime

In summer we sometimes have an evening walk as well

Weekdays - walk at 6:30 for about half an hour then breakfast and a treat. Dog walker will either come at lunch time and walk for an hour or if I’m working from home I’ll take her out for 30 minutes. Another walk at 6pm ish for about 30 minutes then dinner. Either another walk or out for a quick pee any time between 8pm and 10pm. Personally, I feel I should walk her more and I do in the summer but struggle in the cold and dark.

Weekends we get up later and she probably has 4 30 minute walks - off lead chasing a ball if possible and when I can I’ll take her for an hours walk.

Work days, we are up at 6.30, he has breakfast & medication, and we leave home at 7.30.

Work 8-4, he comes with me and is expected to sleep under my desk or potter around the office quietly for the majority of the day. Walk and lunch at 12.

Walk after work, around an hour.

Gets dinner when home, usually in some kind of treat dispensing/interactive toy. Normally play indoors or do some scent games whilst my dinner cooks.

In the evening usually gets a chew.

Toilet walk around 10pm.

Supper and medication around 10.30pm.

Bed, then rinse & repeat :)

Should be said he’s 14 so happy with a quieter routine. Weekends, meals are roughly all about 2hrs later. May have two shorter walks instead of one main longer one.

0700 run off led across Downs with my husband approx 8 miles.
0830 breakfast.
Sits nearby whilst I work.
1230 walk around footpath from house off lead approx 3 miles.
1600 approx walk and ball fetching for approx an hour on Downs.
1800 Supper.
2200 last garden trip and into crate.

We're fairly predictable in our routine.

7am - out for a wee
9am - long walk, usually around 3-4 miles followed by a bath
11am - breakfast
1pm - out for a wee and sniff
3pm - afternoon walk, around 20 minutes usually or shorter if we've walked further in the morning and followed by yet another bath
6pm - tea
9pm - out for a wee
11pm - out for another wee, prolonged sniff then bed

Ours is a very active working cocker spaniel, he's 4 1/2 and spends a load of time in between all of this trying to get me to throw his ball. I can be on the phone, eating, on the toilet and he's dropping the wretched thing in my lap . He has a toy box that he likes to empty over the day too.

Ours can seemingly tell the time, so likes to stick to set meal times during the week. If it gets to 7.30 am or 5.30pm, he sits under the kitchen clock and looks from the clock to his food cupboard until we get the hint. Thankfully, he also seems amenable to flexible times at the weekend.

He has a 3 mile-ish off lead walk after the school run, we try and mix the location up, and another one in the afternoon.

Rest of the day he sleeps, mooches around the garden and chases the odd squirrel.

He has a favourite toy and gets it out after his evening meal

He likes to go out at 10pm for his nighttime wee, except he just pretends and waits on the patio for 20 seconds and comes back in. He then has a treat and goes to bed on the sofa.

If no-one is in, he goes to inlaws or my parents for the day. He spends 3 hours at the groomer's every 6 weeks. This is not his favourite thing.

Up, breakfast, park, home, nap, walk, biscuits, out for last wee, basket.
