The miracle of the Kong

After years of Kongless dog ownership, I've finally discovered just how miraculous these things are - gave both my dogs their dinner in them (their dry food mixed with some peanut butter) this evening and my God, it's worn them out. And chewing the stuff out of the middle took them ages too, rather than the half a nanosecond it usually takes.

It's a revelation. How have I not discovered this before now??

Agree! Just discovered this for my 5 Months old lab who devours her food within 0.01 of a second. We put peamutt butter in when we want her to be distracted for a bit.

The red ball ones are good too, think they're called Stuff-A-Balls or something similar. I buy frozen liver chunks or tripe chunks and put them in and it takes my dogs twenty/thirty minutes to get all the chunks out.

Haven't seen that one MrsDeacon but I did get these in Pets at Home this afternoon:

www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/searchterm?searchTerm=wheelie+fun+treat+puzzle

www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/dog-games-star-spinner-puzzle

Trouble with both of those is that they'd worked them out in about five minutes and got bored.

I've got a couple of the balls that you stuff with treats and the dogs have to roll them around to make the treats fall out. They're good but again, they don't last very long. Younger dog discovered if she just picked it up and shook it she could get the treats out quicker.

My much missed old dog had a couple of those puzzle type ones - she just used to find a way to pick them up and shake them til the treats came out and give me this look Hmm

Current dog is lovely but not so bright so can be occupied for a bit longer Grin

Yes, I got That Look Hmm from my dogs too at the puzzles. Clearly not very impressed with them Grin

How do you all clean out your kongs? Providing ddog doesn't do a thorough job... Grin

abbey44 · 05/01/2018 23:47

I put them in a washing up bowl with hot soapy water, checked there was nothing left inside (there wasn't, but I used an old toothbrush just to make sure) then rinsed under the tap and left to dry.

I can't believe how quiet they've both been this evening - I haven't heard a thing from either of them, they're both flat out. Normally there'd have been at least some fussing...and I'm guessing they've actually had less to eat than usual as well.

You might like to join the Canine Enrichment group on Facebook - lots of good ideas there.

DDog very much enjoys his Kong wobbler too, which is proving indestructible (hurrah!)

abbey44 · 06/01/2018 13:01

Thanks for the Facebook link - that's got some great ideas on.

Off to look up snuffle mats.....

Kongs just go in the dishwasher in our house Smile. We have 3 Kongs per dog so there's always 2 each in the freezer ready to go, while one is being eaten/washed. Freezing them means it takes the dogs far longer to get the mixture out.
