Our lovely lovely puppy is almost 11 weeks old now, and I forgot to ask the vet yesterday about when to cut down his food to 2 meals a day instead of 3 which he has now.
Can anyone give me some idea please? Thanks

With our large breed we did it at three months. A lot depends on the dog though.
Now ours is coming on three years he is back having 3 a day, it keeps his hunger at bay and his back end business more consistent.

he's a border terrier, so a small breed.

We didn't cut ours down until 6 months old as puppies are hungry but have small tummies.

11 week old small breed should be on 4 meals a day.

I have been wondering this too. My puppy is 8 months, she's fairly small, a cavapoo. I'm still giving her three meals a day. A friend of mine was advised to do that for 18 months.

fivecupsoftea I found my cocker naturally started to eat less at breakfast and lunch around 5 months of age so by the time we got to 6 months it was natural to cut meals to two a day. He is now also moving towards one a day but I still offer him breakfast so he has something in his stomach before he heads to daycare. If three meals work for you and your dog then keep at it but I think the other way e.g. Cutting it down too early is because puppies need to eat lots but their stomachs can't take big meals in one or two meals.

Also at an age of 11 weeks as my pup got older the feeding guide for the food I used showed he needed more as he increased in age before reducing again as he reached his adult weight. He would not have been able to eat that much in just two sittings.

Mine is still on 3 meals at 2 years. I cut it down to 2 at 18 months but he gets so hungry and is inclined to be thin. If I give him 2 larger meals he gets loose stools.

11 weeks sounds very young to be on even 3 - I would have thought 4 would be more appropriate at that age.

Should still be on 4 meals at this age, down to 3 meals at around 4 months and then down to 2 from 6 months onwards (for life).

thanks everyone. We'll keep him on 3 then for now. Our pervious border terrier was v happy on one meal in the evening.

My five month old is still on four meals a day most days! He's a whippet with seemingly boundless energy and is actively seeking out all his meals ( definately not fat) so it does depend on the individual as well.

Deffo too early

I have a large breed and waited until she was 5 months old before cutting down to 2. We cut the afternoon meal out.

I know you're wondering when to do it but honestly chances are you'll just know. You'll notice changes in his eating habits etc.

What I did at 4 months, leading up to cutting down her meals, I began feeding her more in the mornings and evenings and less in the afternoon... that way she slowly got used to dropping down to two meals.

This is very timely for me as my retriever is nearly one and I've been told recently she's not a puppy she's an adult and should be on two meals now. She's been picky about breakfast for about two months but we put it down to being too hot and coming into season. She's refused her breakfast the last two days again and refused lunch yesterday. From today we're trying leaving lunch and giving her tea and then breakfast tomorrow.

Someone else said she's fully grown now and a bit big. She weighed 25.8 kilos a month ago.

Our Labrador retriever pup had three meals a day until we swapped him onto the raw food diet at around five months. Now he's nearly a year and still has two a day, but he does have a bit of fruit at lunch time. He'd never stop eating if we let him Blush

I found mine didn't want her lunchtime meal at 5 months (toy poodle), was just not hungry, so we went to 2 meals then.
