Getting a new puppy - ground rules for the kids?

We are getting a puppy soon, does anyone have tips about the the interaction with the puppy and kids?

I've had dogs all my life but my OH has recently moved in and his kids stay a few times a week. This is the first time I've brought a puppy into the house with little kids, 4 and 6. I had a 9 year old springer when I met my OH and the kids had some interaction with him but he died before my OH moved in. The kids love animals but they aren't the best at giving them space but I'm sure this will get better in time as the novelty wears off.

I don't want getting a puppy to be all about rules, but I want the interaction with the kids to be a positive experience for the puppy.

I'm planning to get a crate for the puppy, more to give the puppy space than keeping him penned in but does anyone have experience to share....

He dog is not a toy. Don't grab it's tail. Pull its ears or annoy it.
