Damaged pad/paw-vet or not?

We are sitting a working cocker at the moment. He's damaged a pad on his front paw, quite a piece out of it rather than a scratch. He's kicking it alot, he's not limping particularly. Should I take him to the vet or just keep it clean myself. I've had dogs in the past and can't imagine them bandaging it. Any wise words?

Not 'kicking' licking!

If he keeps licking it its probably hurting him.
Based on my experience, I'd take him to vet.
My dog trod on something sharp and had a tiny hole in paw, only slight limp but it kept bleeding a bit so took him to vet after a few days. He had an abscess that needed an operation under GA to sort out, + antibiotics after.
