Jack Russell / Chihuahua cross?

Hi. I have been offered a pup who is a JR / Chihuahua cross.
He is 10 weeks.

I have no experience of either of these breeds.
Are either of them especially 'nippy'?
(I appreciate it depends on the actual pup / it's socialisation etc)

I have a Basset, for whom I'd like a companion.
She is 6 and likes a snooze. Very laid back, very affectionate.

Does this sound like a marriage made in hell (potentially?)

I've got a JR. She's very very energetic and very stubborn. She's never been a nipper or a barker. She was easy to train, brilliant at recall and extremely loving and loyal. I had reservations beforehand but I honestly couldn't think of a better dog.
I would never describe her as chilled and I imagine she would drive your other dog to distraction though!

My Shih Tzu pup can be hard work, but is THE most beautiful and adorable thing I have ever clapped eyes on (and I include my human babies in that Grin ).

I'd avoid if it were me, especially that combo, it won't be fair on you or your current dog. Would also avoid terriers for the same reason, mum has a WHT and she won't leave my dog (choc lab) alone.

I've got one, he has his moments of being a bit of a live wire but he's a reasonably laid back dog to live with, he gets 3, 20 min walks a day at the moment - ultimately his choice as he dislikes being out for long in the cold/wet. He does enjoy a couple of games of fetch a day but is equally content to snuggle up - my main issue with him is that he's a proper coldy and will curl up under anything (getting changed, jumper lands on floor, dog nabs it lol) he's got issues but they're not breed related, they are related to his old owners shitness!

I adore the little cutie. And I swore blind I "didn't do small dogs"

I have one too and he's one laid back chilled out little dog.
He is fully grown and weighs 6kg's.
He loves kids and other dogs and is not nippy at all.
He has one on lead 20 minute walk and a 20 minute off lead run around a day but if he doesn't get that he's OK as if it's too cold or raining he refuses to go anyway, so he's not hyper at all.
He loves a good play session with a tug toy or small ball but other than that he loves nothing more than curling up next to me or under anything he can find big enough to burrow under as he does feel the cold quite easily.
He does bark at the postman or people he does not know at the door but other than that he's a great little dog and I would definitely recommend one.

I would suggest something like a Papillon, Shih Tzu, Pug or French Bulldog. Paps are probably the most active out of that lot but not as much as your average JR. Whippets are also fab dogs, I've not had a snappy or yappy one in yet. Tbh I'd be more concerned about your Bassett squashing a Chi x than a Whippet. Bassets are awesome though, I would be really tempted to get another one if I were you!

I have had some lovely JRTs come through the practice also, but as a rule with some Terrier breeds and Chis/Chi crosses I'm not surprised if we have some "handling issues" whereas with something like a Whippet, Shih Tzu, Pug or Cavalier it tends to be the opposite.

Basset not Bassett! (unless you call it Bertie Grin)

OldGreyCat · 23/11/2015 19:57

My awesome Bassie is snoozing at my feet as I speak.

not so awesome when all 36kg of her was launching itself AT the bed last night when she got a bit of a 'hungry tum' during the night (can happen, even when given a small supper at midnight). Don't think I could cope with 2 doing this.

I've not done anything about the Chia/JRT x atm but I am grateful for all advice.x

My girl is a chihuahua x jack Russell and has never nipped ever! Everyone loves her she's over friendly with people. Can be funny with some other dogs though and that's the only time I've seen her snap. She lives with 6 kids inc my baby and is great with them. She's quite needy and wants all the attention they are her bad points. But overall she is a great dog.
