Training DDogs to toilet in marked area?

I have a large back garden which is awesome for my two rescue mutts. It has a large lawn and a large area of beds and thick trees/bushes almost like a woodland (but it's not that big!)
However they toilet generally anywhere although I do see a preference in each dog for location!
I'd love to mark off a largish section of the lawn with stones or small log/picket fencing iykwim and train them to toilet in this area. It'd be easier to do a sweep as I wouldn't have to walk the entire garden and try to find poos in the 'woodland' and also as DD grows I'd like to let her play in the garden and it'd be great to know there's no mess where she's playing.

Would it be as simple as marking it, then rewarding them every time they go in the area? Has anyone ever done something like this? Both dogs are quite good at being taught tricks and can be bribed with food. I guess I'd just have to be consistent and keep it up.

We moved 10 months ago and have a 9mo DD which is why I've not really done anything proactive thus far!! Grin

Mine goes in a set area...it is fenced off sort of though, I just kept sending him in there till he'd been and rewarding him - a bit like initial toilet training, but easier.
