Confused by new vaccination protocol re parainfluenza

The older of my two dogs went in for his core boosters, plus kennel cough, yesterday. My dh took him, so I wasn't there to talk them through with the vet.

When he came home he said we have to take him back in a month's time for a booster, as the Lepto vaccination has changed to include two new strains - which is fair enough.

Just had a look at his vaccination record and noticed he's also been given a different core booster. Previously, dependent on year he's either had DHPPi, plus Lepto and KC or just the Pi element, plus Lepto and KC. This year he's just had DHP, with no Pi element, plus Lepto4 and KC.

Dh called the surgery and spoke to a vet nurse who explained that the Parainfluenza and Lepto4 vaccinations cannot be given together and they consider Parainfluenza to be covered by the KC booster, so no longer bother giving a separate Pi booster. (If Pi is covered by KC boosters, why have we been paying for annual Pi boosters all this time? Hmm)

The thing is, he's due to go into kennels in a fortnight and if they still insist on the Parainfluenza booster they could refuse to take him. Tomorrow is the latest he could have the Pi booster in time for them to still take him, so I need to get my head around all this asap.

Can anyone help?

Phone or go into another vet practice in your area taking his vaccination record with you and ask them if he needs it and phone kennels to enquire as well

So you are almost certainly talking about nobivac vaccines. The nobivac KC protects against both parainfluenza a and bordetella so yes you have adequate kennel cough cover.
Why where you giving parainfluenza twice in previous years? Well up until about 10 years ago the KC vaccines only cover bordetella then nobivac launched the KC that covered for a year and contained both. But the licenced combination also included Pi with the cost of a vaccine licence being in excess of 1 million pounds and taking 5 years of research it takes a while for this to catch up.
So in previous years the vets were trying to give the best cover within the limitations of the licences.

The licenced combination referred to the injectable vaccines.

Your final question if he has had Nobivac KC yes his cover is adequate for kennels.
