Puppy happy to mess up crate

Hello, I have a fab new puppy who's is doing a good half of his business outside. However he is also very happy to wander back into his crate and use that too. I've washed the bedding, put new bedding in, cleaned it all with bio soap powder but all to no avail. I like the idea of crate training as we want to take him away on holidays and I have children so a quiet safe place is a good thing and he is very happy in there but I've read that once they soil it crate training may no longer work as an aid to toileting. I'm around all the time so am taking him out into the garden regularly and am expecting lots of mishaps but wasn't expecting them in the bed. Has anyone persevered with it after a similar problem? Thanks

Forgot to ask should I try puppy pads? Would they be more appealing than a bed to poo/wee on? I don't want to undo the good work of him being happy to go outside though?

My puppy did this until I differentiated between her bed (in one half) and paper or nothing in the other - she then stopped wetting her crate. I would also keep the door of the crate shut when she wasn't in it, which prevented her from not weeing outside for 20 minutes, coming straight in, making a beeline for her crate and weeing in it! I was advised NOT to use puppy pads - and just gave MASSES of praise when she did the right thing and ignoring it when she didn't....

She did stop after a week or so - just be patient and persevere and I'm sure he'll get it soon!
