Anyone got a dachshund/chihuahua cross?

Having been dogless for 3 years after owning dogs for 26 years, I am considering rehoming a dachshund/chihuahua cross who is 8 months old. I have been used to larger breeds but now work part-time and have a very small garden (but am round the corner from a lovely park) so none of my previous breeds would be suitable. I work four long mornings and DH works 3 days a week.

The longest time the dog would be left would be 4 hours and some weeks DH might be working from home. He is crate trained and house trained, very lively but I would plan to take him to training classes. Our youngest DS is nearly 12 and the dog has been brought up with a five year old with no problems and also is best friends with 2 cats and shares a basket with them (this is important as we have four!) . We are hoping to meet him this week (he is only up for rehoming due to a move into rental and they don't want any money just a special home).

I think we could offer him that, but is there anything I need to know about this combination of breeds or smaller dogs in general? Thanks in advance

Hmm, I struggle to believe a dog as tiny as I'm imaging couldn't be smuggled into a new home....
Unless he's a barker or something.

I also find it odd that a landlord would allow two cats but not a tiny dog.

That's not very helpful I'm sorry, I am a bit incensed at these people though.
I have a dog and still managed to find rentals and my dog isn't small!

Dachshunds are prone to back issues and small dogs tend to have tooth trouble do you need to be really on the ball with daily tooth brushing, can be prone to luxating patella.

Need to be treated properly I.e if you would allow it from a Rottweiler then don't tolerate it from your chi to avoid small snappy badly behaved dog syndrome

Just what I thought, although I haven't owned a small dog I do believe they should have the same boundaries. They say he isn't yappy, but I know that behaviour could be addressed with some retraining if need be.

I have a chihuahua cross Jrt and with small dogs like the other poster said you have to treat them like another size dog so as to avoid small dog syndrome.
Also watch with them jumping off things like the sofa or chairs as you don't want to damage their legs as both chihuahuas and dachshunds can suffer with luxating patellas.
Make sure your garden is secure as you will be surprised how small a hole a little dog can squeeze through plus dachshunds are digger.

I am still waiting to go and see him as the mum of the owner is looking after him, they have had a bit of a family crisis and she hasn't got back to me. She assured me they haven't changed their mind and the advert has been taken down so am hoping we can see him soon. Do you find yours needs carrying if you go out for a long day, the lady says he is tiny and more chihuahua sized?

Might need endurance building but I see no reason why a little dog couldn't manage big walks

Mine is more chihuahua size than Jrt he will walk but does get tired and need to be carried for a little while if out all day but he is quite lazy.
He's happy to go out and about all day but equally happy to stay home curled up next to me. He much more chihuahua than Jrt not hyper and always on the go like a jack russell he's more calm and laided back.
But I will tell if the one your getting is more chihuahua personality wise be prepared for a little shadow, as chihuahuas are velcro dogs with their person. mine follows me everywhere.
