Anyone know of any rescues that rehome dogs to people with kids?

We're ready for a new dog after grieving for a long time for our boy who was PTS in the summer.

We have always rehomed. DS is now three and of course at the end of our boys life we had to manage him (grumpy and old) and toddler DS and it was fine. I feel totally able to cope with a child and a dog.

However I can't really find anywhere that will consider us.

We're in SW London. Can anyone recommend anywhere to try? I can't live without a dog really so we'll get a puppy if we have to but of course I'd rather rehome as we always have.

I am miles away from you so can't recommend anywhere directly but here, Yorkshire, some greyhound rescue places might. And greyhounds are fabulous with a small child (very easy dogs! I used to foster them, although I am a border collie owner myself)

I've contacted Hersham hounds and a whippet rescue, nothing. I need to phone really.

I hadn't even remembered dogs trust! How silly. Thanks. They've nothing on their website about rehoming with kids so I'll call tomorrow and ask.

Hope Rescue will rehome with children as long as they know the dog's history. Dogs are assessed in foster homes before rehoming, so they have a good idea of their behaviour. They use foster homes in different areas of the UK.

Just Whippets (used to be Scruples Whippet Rescue) will also rehome with children as long as the dog is known to be used to them.

I've emails just whippets but no response.

Dogs trust looks like a no go. I clicked on every dog and all say only suitable for older children. Looks like this might be a policy.

I will call just whippets.... Any other ideas?

Southern Lurcher Rescue - have a look at their hounds needing homes page, they have a litter of pups, from a pregnant dog that they took in, which will be ready to go in about a month. We had a home check at the weekend and are going to have one of them.

I have found them really easy and straightforward to deal with. We are going to choose our pup during half term, can't wait. They still have more than half of them available.

Dogs trust absolutely do rehome dogs to families with children...it's just that they're very cautious about which dogs they deem suitable (which is only fair) so what that means is that they only have a few dogs suitable for young children and there tends to be people waiting for them already.

If you contact them though and fill out all the paperwork they will then get in touch with you when they assess a dog as suitable.

As a general rule, smaller rescues are more flexible re. rehoming with young children. Many of their dogs are with foster families, as they don't have big, expensive kennels.

I think the fact that your DS is dog-savvy will be very helpful

You could look at Pro Dogs Direct, All Dogs Matter, Holbrook are a bit further away but have lovely dogs, they also rehome on behalf of Desperate Greekies Dog Rescue

Have you spoken to Battersea? Over the years I have seen several (we used to go there a lot) that have no restrictions on them with regards to children (admitedly not many, but enough) and even some say "I would prefure to live with older children", but that's not the same as "I can only".

Evesham Greyhound and Lurcher rescue def rehome to people with children (and can homecheck anywhere) - I know some people with quite little ones who have dogs from them

There's one in ascot. They definitely rehome to children. Been going over 50 years. They don't do home check - it's very well run.

Most if them do, you need to speak to them though. We got ours from Blue Cross, but we were on waiting lists or in contact with Battersea, Dogs Trust, All dogs Matter, The Mayhew, and a few more small, local rescues. DS is 5 btw.

hi I have had greyhounds from Hersham Hounds and they definitely will rehome to homes with children - did they say no then?
Pine Ridge, when I went there didn't allow me to view the dogs in their kennels to select one that I liked unlike every other rescue centre I have been to, they bring one out to you that they deem suitable - that put me off.

I should add that Hersham will let you take the dog for a home trial before you decide to adopt to see if that is the right dog for you and I think that is brilliant

Don't despair! Most dogs' homes will rehome with children. An awful lot of dogs come in as strays so they just don't know and it's not easy testing them. It also depends on how you are planning to deal with child/dog interactions and what you expect from the dog. The main priority is keeping everyone safe, and the dogs home would prefer not for the dog to be returned having snapped at a child.

Dogs Trust will rehome with children, but they don't always put a lot of information on their website. It's better to go to the nearest centre and register with them. They may know of dogs recently brought in, or on the waiting list who aren't on the website.

Sometimes you have to be patient and wait for the right dog, but it's worth it!
