Puppy has been sick after worming powder

Hello

My 12 week old puppy has just been sick twice. About 4 hours ago I gave her the first dose (Panacur 3 day course) of her worming powder. She was fine right up until she was sick but is now very quiet.

I called Vet Fone who have been very helpful (there was no answer on the 24hour service our vet provides). They are going to call to check on her in a few hours and they said in the meantime to feed her plain chicken and rice. I forgot to ask how much chicken and rice though (she is 12 weeks and 5.5kg). Is it half chicken and half rice? Should I poach the chicken? I'm sorry for all the stupid questions. I just don't want to make her worse.

Could it be the worming powder that has made her sick?

The advice for diarrhea or vomiting for pups and dogs is usually very bland food - we were advised one of two options - boiled chicken or boiled white fish with boiled rice.

The ratio isn't important, this is only a temporary measure. Microwave or boil a small piece of cod or other white fish or if you wish use a bit of fat less chicken and mix that in with a bit of boiled rice. It truly won't matter is the rations aren't exactly half. The idea is to give her nutrition and help settle her tummy.

Ours had diarrhea enough to make her flat one day, we kept her on a little by little fed of microwaved cod and rice, she was okay in a day.

Thank you for replying. I gave her some chicken and rice and she has eaten it all. She seems a bit perkier but we are keeping a careful eye in her.

I will ask the vet whether it might be the wormer before I give her the other doses.

Feed her little and often with the chicken and rice, most importantly is for her to drink to keep hydrated.. If she has a tummy ache she may not want to eat.

I would say it is the Panacur causing the problems. Workers can disagree with some pups and older dogs. One of my dogs cannot tolerate any workers at all, interestingly was fine as a pup but is sick with any wormer now.

I would not give the remaining days of Panacur until the tummy upset is finished and pup is back to herself. It may be worth trying another make of wormer, Drontal maybe, to see if she can tolerate that. Slightly under dosing can also help.

Forgot to say, you mention worming powder. A liquid wormer is normally better for pups, Panacur do a liquid.

I would get a different wormer, sounds like it didn't agree with her, if she keeps the chicken and rice down I would return to her normal food as chances are it was the wormer and now she has got it out of her system she should be fine.

Panacur is a horrible wormer. - it usually causes an upset tum in my house.

What did the breeder use for worming?

The breeder used Panacur too (not sure if they used powder or not) which is why the vet used it. She had loose stools when she first arrived which was just after her previous worming so maybe this time she just reacted more? She has grown a lot so the dose was probably larger.

I didn't realise how anxious I would be about the puppy! It really is like having a baby.
