I think my dog has heatstroke ?Or something else

Took her out for a walk earlier. It was a lot warmer than I anticipated and I cut our walk short and didn't make her walk fast.

When I got back I had to go straight out, I have only just got back, and DP says she's been sick about 6 times, and her jowls/underside of her snout have all swollen up.

I feel terrible. She's drank a crapload of water , and I have spoken to my vet who said to feed her something really plain, like white pasta and she'll likely be okay if no other symptoms.

Has anybody any experience of this? Anything I can do to make her feel better or help her recover?

Was she on the lead/in your view at all times? I ask because our dog got really poorly after a walk a little while ago and it turned out to be poisoning, according to the vet - they thought she may have eaten poisonous mushrooms, or poisoned bait perhaps. She is a spaniel and goes into the undergrowth a lot!
Her symptoms came on very quickly though - sickness, exhaustion, bloating, so a bit different to what you describe.
If your vet isn't telling you to take her in, I wouldn't worry too much, as they tend to err on the side of caution. I would just watch her closely, as they suggested. Hope all is OK!

Did you walk through woodland? It's the time of year for seasonal canine illness. If you did pls get to vet ASAP x

Not 100% of the time, no :(Having said this she was always close by and I didn't see her eating anything, also she has a habit of, if she picks anything up she'll carry it for ages before eating it (hopes)!

Was your dog okay?

So frightening to think that folk will put poison down where people walk their dogs.

DP says she's better now than she was when I was out. I'll be up all night I think! I feel like a terrible dog owner.

Not woodland as such, but through a 'nature reserve' part of a park where there are woodland characteristics-a beck, trees etc. Maybe I should call the vet back-having said this, he never mentioned that?

Sorry, didn't see your message last night. My dog was fine in the end, though she did have to stay in the animal hospital for a few days/nights, and was on a drip. It worries me as we can't necessarily avoid it happening again - she is just not the sort of dog you can keep on a lead!
How is your dog now? If you are still worried, I would take her to the vet today if you can - to put your mind at ease if nothing else.
And you are not a bad dog owner - you are clearly a very loving one in fact. This is not your fault!

Glad she was okay-I know, It's not a great situation, I'd hate to have to keep a dog on a lead ALL the time, they won't understand that It's for their own good.

I'm taking her to the vet today. She's been sick a few times in the night, and is shaking her head a lot.

I am thinking it is something other than heatstroke, now from the symptoms of that, it seems like It's something else.

She hates the vet though, even though she's not usually an aggressive dog at all , she has to be muzzled to go there 'cause she snaps at him. This will be fun

Thank you. He couldn't fit her in until 3pm. Her eyes are a bit sunken and she's not her usually pesky bouncy, giddy self. IF you see in the pics, her jowls are droopy, that isn't normal for her-I don't know if It's just because she's been sick so much, or if It's a symptom of something :(

I'll update. Thanks for the well wishes, I'm worried but feel better now I've got a vet appointment.

Okay the vet suspects pancreatic inflammination. Caused usually by stress or something she's eaten or drank. I don't know what it could be, she's usually so happy and bouncy :(

I've to take her back in in 48 hours to see if the jab he's given her has worked, and if not she's to be put on a drip, same as you describe lovely , for a few nights.

I guess I feel less bad that I didn't cause it by taking her out when it was too hot, but I'm wondering WTH has caused it, now :(

Glad to hear the symptoms seem to be easing. It's such a worry, isn't it? Fingers crossed for you both that it will all ease up now, and just be one of those things.

Did the vet have any clue what, if it was poisoning, it might have been? I have to say we stopped taking ours on the particular route where we think she was poisoned. Game birds are raised on the land, and I have a suspicion there might be poisoned bait laid there for predators, maybe for birds of prey? Guess I'll never know for sure, though.

There aren't any adders round your way are there? A friends dog got bitten by an adder and had a swollen face and was sick. Here.

He had no idea what it could be. She seems a lot better now and I am about to take her back to the vets-if he's satisfied that the worst is over, we're laughing, if not she has to be an inpatient and be on a drip.

She's going to be okay!

Vet gave her another jab of antibiotics and we've to feed her a very basic diet (scrambled eggs/babyfood) for one week. But she doesn't have to go on a drip, and the vet was pleased with hr progress from when I first took her in.

She's almost back to being a pain in the butt bouncy,active, happy pooch again :)
