When is a dog no longer a 'puppy'

I am looking for a rescue lurcher at the moment. I do not want a puppy as I need to be able to leave the dog a couple of days a week for work meetings (dog walker/dog daycare obviously as appropriate). I know this won't suit a puppy who needs intensive company, training and socialisation.

But how young is no longer a puppy? Does it depend on the dog? Breed? Is a one year old more likely to be ok with being on their own for a bit? 18 months?

It depends on breed, size and the individual temperament and prior training of the dog. Bigger dogs mature more slowly.

A reputable rescue will be able to match you with a suitable dog but as a rough guide I would be thinking along the lines of 18 months plus (but a bit older if not well socialised).
