dog acting ill after hair cut

hi my dog had his hair cut last friday ( very short ) which we asked for as it was matted and long,he has seemed depressed , off his food,hiding behind curtains , scuttling close to the floor when walking , his skin underneath is very pink , hes bitten his tail and made it bleed , it is so unlike him ,he is a springer so usually very very hyper , has this happened to anyone elses dog after an extreme haircut .

Why was your dog's fur matted and long? Have you not been taking care of him? Maybe he's got a skin infection.
Take him to the vet and maybe think about getting his hair cut a bit more often so it doesn't get into that state again.

Maybe he has razor burn. If he was matted the process was probably very uncomfortable for him. Do you know the groomers? Has he been alright when with them before?
He sounds very distressed by the experience. Give him plenty of TLC and set a time for improvement and if none take him to the vet.

cut but letting it get matted in the first place isn't.

i did think that natasha and did wash him off with just water , i just looked at another site and someone said it might be clipper burn on his skin as its so pink , will ring vet and see if there is something i can put on him .

My dog gets his hair cut every 8 weeks. It is always matted and scruffy when he goes. How can you judge the OP does not look after her dog properly from that? Ridiculous.

OP, not sure, maybe a reaction to products they might have used?

it is only behind his ears that he gets matts , the rest of his coat was just longish , he has been to the same groomer before , he goes in and out very happy , maybe it was jut too short this time , lesson learnt .

Maybe he's just feeling over exposed. Poor lad.

Maybe an oat bath would help his skin calm down?

fluffydoge my dog doesnt just sit in his basket looking pretty all day , when hes been swimming in the sea or rivers ,and running through the woods it does tend to get a bit scruffy and matted so rather than leaving it and taking him to the groomers to get sorted id say he was pretty well looked after .

My cat acted like this after he had some detergent spilled on him...get your dog a special treat for his dinner. It can cheer them up a bit.

It does sound like clipper rash. Pop him to the vet to be on the safe side. Calendula cream is very soothing, but check with your vet first just in case it's infected or he's had an allergic reaction to something they've used.

thanks to the posters who have given good advice and suggestions as to what it might be , will keep an eye on him , ring the vet and see what they suggest as well .

Your op sounded like his fur was so long and matted that it had to be shaved. You didn't say just the ears were matted the rest was just long.
It sounds like it was clipped too close to the skin and it hurts him a bit. Probably keep stroking to a minimum and give him lots of treats and see how he gets on. Hope he's ok.

Although...If it was done last Friday you'd expect it to have calmed down by now. I'd call the vet and describe it see what they say.

I trying to imagine a springer with its hair shaved short enough to give it clipper burn! Why?? Why?? I hope his coat isn't ruined for good.

The haircut sounds like a red herring - he needs to visit the vet.

apparently it takes a few days for the clipper burn to show , and with this hot weather it has made it more irritable , been told to keep him cool , wet paper towels on and a fan , seems a bit happier now , thanks for your input VanessaShanesa
