Dog eating own poo when got a stomach upset

My dog doesn't normally eat his own poo (although he does like bird poo - yuck) but in the last week he has had two spells of diarhhoea and both times he has eaten his own poo afterwards. I imagine if it is only semi-digested, so he thinks it is food. It is absolutely vile and I feel quite sick (he did it just now).

Help!

I don't know about dogs, but I've witnessed cats eating their own vomit and I believe it's an instinct thing. Not wanting possible predators knowing there's a potentially weaker animal around.

Grim stuff.

Any advice out there?

Distract him away from it with a high value reward, clean it up straight away and work on a solid 'leave' cue.

Thanks lil and sorry for the delay. He hasn't had a dodgy tummy again but I'm working on the leave it command being firmer ready for next time.
