Dog peeing blood - intermittently for over a year.

Our eight year old lab has been peeing frank blood on and off for over a year. He had loads of investigations last year (luckily on insurance - they forked out over £3,000!) and have found nothing. He becomes anaemic, but has iron tablets, then it stops for a few months. Has anyone heard of/had the same problem with a dog? Vets think now just treat anaemia. I don't really want to put him through loads of invasive tests again. He's otherwise fit, well, full of energy, shiny coat etc.

What investigations have they done? When my boy was peeing blood it was down to an enlarged, cystic prostate, which was only found via camera investigation and biopsy. We had him neutered and he's been fine ever since.

My sisters dog would pee blood, we took him to the vets and they did all sorts of tests. He wasn't neutered, so they did that to be on the safe side with regards to 'boy problems' they then thought it was a kidney infection. This happened a couple more times and again it was always a kidney infection, steroids and antibiotics were given. The last time it was serious and he was in the vets for 4 days, lots of blood and urine tests and the results were that his kidneys were failing. In the end as there were no changes for so long it was decided to let him go so he wasn't in pain anymore.

Sorry if this scares you but please see if you can get your vet to take this further or refer you to a specialist.

My last Scottie had this, he came out of the groomers one afternoon and peed pure blood. I was terrified.
The vet began tests, a few days later he seemed to have an episode in the garden where he stumbled as if he was drunk. It was all very strange.

They tested him for cushings and all sorts, nothing could be found. Finally, as he was only 8 and seemingly fit they operated and found his liver was virtually eaten away. He'd got copper storage syndrome and had it from puppyhood. We didn't know until it was to late. I broke my heart when the vet told me. She gave him a week at best.
We lost him 9 months later, just after his 9th Birthday. I was devastated when we had to have him PTS but he had deteriorated so much we had no choice.

I have another Scottie now, but I miss Jack every day.

Thanks for replies - he's been seen by a specialist veterinary
centre last year(referred by our vet) - had internal bladder scans, kidney investigations, been cleared for UTI and all infections - has had every investigation possible bar an MRI and opening him up! Everyone has drawn a complete blank. He really is very well, unless peeing allot of blood as he gets a bit anaemic. Some iron tablets and he's fine. It's very odd!

@moosemama I know this is such an old post but I'm incredibly worried about my 10yr old dog. Lots of blood in wee. Started off as drips 2 months ago but has gotten worse. Had medication to try and shrink prostate which hasn't worked. Awaiting results of a special urine test to check for signs of cancer, but seems fairly well in himself. Lost my other older dog in March and so scared I'm going to lose another. Did anyone have similar and a positive outcome?
