new puppy arrives sunday and iv just realised i have completely over looked where my cats bowl are going, Help!

puppy will be in the kitchen as will his food/water. Cats food water is already in the kitchen they have dry food down all the time always have done, im worried the puppy will eat the food if i leave it down??? will it? can anyone advise what i could do as my mind has drawn a blank. The kitchen is the only room in the house with hard flooring (minus the dwn stairs toilet and main bathroom) im happy to have cats food and water on the toy/crap box at the back of the lounge dh is addement he does not

Yes the puppy will eat the food. My cats eat on the counter in the utility room.

Our dogs have their food and water in the kitchen and the cats have theirs in the spare room.

Our dogs would eat any food left out for the cats.

Cats need somewhere quiet to go to feed and toilet.

You do not want the dog getting access to a litter tray they will try and eat the poo

our cats stuff moved into the bathroom when we got the dog (and then next door )

ditavonteesed my sisters cat moved into another house in the next street when she took in our (deceased) mums dog. The cat would pop back every now and again but wouldn't stay.

Three years later when the dog died the cat moved back and if nothing had happened.

I have two friends who both keep cat food bowls on top of the fridge freezer, one had a cat bed up there too :)

Our spare room is now called the cats room

hmmmmm really am going to have to brainstorm cant believe i dint think of this so stupid its been months in the planning

actually we,ve got a little nook in our room that could work will have to convince dh, the food is dry so not smelly and cats are usually out at night they arnt lap cats and tend to stay out most of the night

Our cat now has his food bowls on the chest freezer in the utility room. The puppy jumps up at it, but realistically I can't see her ever being able to jump so high she will make it onto the freezer.

We've had our pup about a month now. First of all, I put the cats' food bowls by the front door and kept pup's food bowl in kitchen.
Then pup started snaffling their (dry) food at every opportunity
We only have two rooms downstairs so my only option was to put cat bowls up on the landing and have to listen to incessant cat biscuit crunching when I try to sleep
Works ok. There are multiple water bowls downstairs so the cats have access

We got a labrador (knowing for eating everything). I did not want to move the bowl nor change the cats habits (thought introducing a dog was enough). Well the cat bowls have remained where they've always stayed and he will not touch a thing. Not during the day, not at night, no matter what's in it. It can be done. But not immediately. Will disclose the method that worked for us after school run if you wish.

I put the cats food things on top of the fridge, all things furry drink the same water from the floor and my cats go out so no litter box but you do have to keep it out of pups reach because it just smells to delicious for them but cat food is higher in protein than dogs and its not really that good for them

Catstolemypants I know! It makes me soo proud. I must admit the temperament of the dog must have helped and the fact that he was terrified of old cat. At the very beginning we kept them separatedly anyway. once the cat was able to be in the same room as the dog we started. by then the cat had already scared the puppy enough for him to be able to control himself. (truthfully the cat trained the dog). So at first we fed the cats first in front of him. He would sit and watch in fear for his life if he went to close. Once the cats left we hid and waited. As soon as he went for the cat bowls we'd use the dogspray (which makes a hissing noise) whichcompletely startled the poor puppy (i am sure he thought the cat would attack him). We've only used for this and a handful of times at the most. Then I'd leave the house for half an hour and see. always spoke to him about ghe bowls before I left. said "no" and the cat name [evil] It didn't take long at all. Of course sometimes I've found the moved towhere he sleeps and reinforced the message.

Now he won't touch them. They share the waterbowl. Interesting when we left him with the housesitter the girst time he thought it was xmas. But now she has told him off too and he is ok.

As you can see it is mostly down to the personality of the cat, the dog and mine. It may not working for everybody or anydog. Ours was very laidback and sweet to start withsoI could work this way. I am aware other dog have a much more stron personality and may not comply. It is worth a try. Plus I am as evil as the cat who is the real topdog.

Seriously it is also teaching yhe puppy his place, which imo should be very low on the pecking order (albeit very much loved) especially in a house full of children and other pets. The dog has learn to live happily with hens too, they cuddle up together.

Our dog looks exactly like yours. I'll try and post pict of him as a puppy watching as the cats eat. The cats always eat before him.

Five minutes after we gave our big boxer a bone he was sat on his beanbag sulking and this was happening in the kitchen.....

...actually, it wasn't in the kitchen, the cat had dragged it into the hallway
