Does your dog spend the evenings growling and protecting their home?

Mine does and I wondered if it's normal. She wil chill out and spread out on the floor but if she hears a noise outside she is up, growling and pacing until she is happy that everything is ok.

He would welcome a burglar in, but if the hedgehog dares to even take step in the garden he's barking out the cat flap.

Oh bless her -it must be tiring for her.
Does she do it in the day too, or just the evening?

What breed?

Oh no! That would get in the way of his snoozing on the sofa. He even looks pissed off if the kids stay up late and he hasn't got quiet to sleep.

Nothing during the day and she doesn't do it in the early evening, mainly after 10pm when it's just me and her and everyone else is in bed.

She is currently spread across the kitchen floor all relaxed and luckily we live in a quietish close although when I go to bed I sometimes hear her growl during the night, she sleeps downstairs.

Is it just because there's no background noise, maybe?
If it could be, maybe provide some?

No, ours never takes the slightest bit of notice of the outside, unless someone knocks the door, in which case he assumes they've come to visit him/give him a fuss/a sausage

What breed is she?

Could just be the breed. My dogs a rottweiler and they're natural guard dogs. If someone walks down the next street... He knows!

It's highly irritating very sweet that he cares so much about his family.

She is a Rotweiller and has the sweetest nature and loving Rottie roll and cuddle I've ever known. She is happy to greet knocks at the door and the postie but after 10 and just me and her.

I just wondered if any other breed did the same, she is so chilled and then bang on protection not that I need her protection

Ummm.... No. My dog spent the earlier past of the evening asleep on our bed. Then he wandered downstairs, climbed up on the sofa and turned upside down. He's now half hanging off the sofa

I have to say that ThatBloodyDog is shit hot at barking at 'intruders' (ie postie) in the day, but he goes off duty at night, and never wakes to the milk delivery in the wee hours.

No. Mine slumber all night. Surprisingly their willingness to earn their keep by barking at distant children playing, things on the radio, far-off dogs etc, stops magically straight after their supper.

Mine is a nightmare when it's just me and him. I take him into my room so I feel safer while I sleep yes I know I'm a grown up but still but he just wanders around 'guarding' all night. I end up making him go downstairs. It was horrendous in our old house when the bedroom windows were just at his height.

I think there are other breeds but none as skilled and amazing as the Rottweiler

Mine does a spot of big game hunting before bed, and runs around snapping at daddy long legs and things and mangling them.

He's only a little boy, so he doen't take on battles he's going to lose.

I actually suspect he's a little bit afraid of going up the garden by himself in the dark.....

I did look into the breed before rescuing her and have always had labs/larger dogs. She was badly treated, it was reported and I then took her in 24 hours later.

She has been a joy and filed a gap in our home but the growling at night is new, she has been here now for 7 months feels like forever

Is she showing me payback for all the money inspend on treats, big beds, food, training, list goes on then?

My border terrier does this - one minute apparently sound asleep on my feet on the sofa, the next minute up on the back of the sofa yapping frantically at whatever cat or fox has walked past our house. He must have very good hearing. He then has to go growling and snuffling round checking the house, and sometimes demands to be let out of the back door to do a bit of barking in case the cat is foolish enough to have stuck around.

He ignores people, by the way, and anyone who comes through the door is greeted like a long-lost friend - it is cats and foxes that are the big threat to the household, obviously.

Mine had never knowingly protected anything.

He barks when he is scared so I can go and rescue him.

Oh yes it's payback. It means she wants to look after you and protect you... Aaawwwwww. Did she do it from day one?

They're fantastic dogs. I'd never have another breed now. Their cuddles are just fantastic and he's great with DD.
