Our dog was in an accident yesterday

He was hit by a car, when he got out of the house whilst the front door was left open momentarily. We've got builders in and the door has been open a lot, but he never normally goes out and is closely watched. Something must have caught his attention when all of ours was turned. He's stayed at the vets overnight and I'm to ring shortly for an update. I've had next to no sleep and feel sick. No advice needed, just wanted to talk to someone.

Our dog also escaped and had an accident. She lost a leg.

That horrible, horrible time was in 2008, but she went on to lead a happy and full life and was the heart and soul of our family up until February this year.

Really hoping all is ok. I would call the vet. Getting through the first 24 hours is a good sign, so hopefully no news in this case is good news. I have a five month old puppy and live on the through road for our village so live in dread of this happening. It does happen easily OP, so don't blame yourself. Our old dog was very reliable but he did once get out and cross the road in a similar situation to yours, luckily he didn't get hit.

Sorry to hear about your dog, what a horrible shock for you. I hope that you get some positive news from your vet very soon. This is the sort of split-second accident that could happen to anyone.

I hope you are okay, it's a horrible shock, one I have experienced myself - though in our case the car went onto the grass verge we were on and hit my on lead dog. Unfortunately she was pts, but the decision was made quite quickly as they had ascertained what they were dealing with within the hour or so. Fingers crossed as you have had no news it's precautionary or at least hopefully not as serious

Hi everyone, thank you so much for your kind words. Latest update from the Vet at lunchtime was that our dog (Marv) was much brighter and had eaten a little. Unfortunately they had scanned his abdomen and there was free moving fluid which he drew out and was blood. At the moment they are treating him with pressure bandages, which I guess is good- that vet doesn't see the need just yet for further intervention. Ultimately they could need to operate (£800! So let's hope they don't). He's stayed in tonight for observation, I rang again at tea time and the person who answered said how well he is doing, wagging tail, happier, eaten, moving round. All good. Fingers crossed for more of the same tomorrow, will let you know. I'm going to call again soon for a further update-- if they haven't changed their number by now :D

Good news that he is doing pretty well. I've been looking at my pup all afternoon and worrying about your dog. It all sounds pretty positive, I do hope he has a good night and manages to avoid any surgery. What sort of dog is he?

He's a Heinz 57 :D. We got him from a local dog's home in Jan 2013, and they said he is part staffs, part Jack Russell, part unknown. I've never met a gentler, more affectionate dog. Thank you for thinking of him.

How is he today?

I like terriers. I hope he is continuing to improve today. He sounds a lovely little chap.

Sorry for late update- he is home! Very subdued and sorry for himself, and not eating to boot. Sleeping in our room tonight

Hope he is brighter today. If he is still not eating and subdued then he might need more pain relief than he is on. He is probably pretty bruised now, homoeopathic arnica 200c, a couple of doses for just today would be a good idea to help the bruising. Get well soon Saucepandog!

Me again. Dog came home Sunday and I took him back to vets Monday. He was-and is- still not eating. His bloods were fine, he had an anti sickness injection and off we went home again, £87 lighter. He's STILL not eating. It's like he's forgotten how to do it yesterday he ate 4 slices of chicken. And that was with us "persuading" him. I've tried all the vets suggestions- chicken, rice, fish, chappy, and his favourite treats. I am sick with worry. Spoke to vet yesterday- she suggested having him in for another scan and a feeding tube :( which we would do but can't afford. I wish I could rewind to last week and have our lovely bouncy happy dog back, instead of this poor sad shaky boy

We'll if he is eating little bits and it's not causing him any ill effects persevere. Try tinned food slightly warmed ,if necessary feed him off a spoon ( always works with mine) . Cat food normally goes down well with dogs ! Your dog is probably still in shock from being hit by a car ,I think if I got run over I'd be in shock for a good while. Hope he feels better soon.

Does anyone know of any schemes or organisations that cover the cost of emergency treatment? I've looked at PDSA and RSPCA but don't think we qualify.

Have a chat to your vet and see if they will let you set up a payment plan ,if you don't ask you don't know.

I agree with floral. When my girl was knocked over they basically just did all the tests straight away (I can't understand why they haven't with you tbh) and I was billed later
