chewing the base of her tail raw

Our rescue Bichon Frise has started to chew the base of her tail and now there is a red raw patch about 2 inches long 1 inch wide. Is there anyway of dealing with this without the vets or is a trip to the vets on the cards...

I think it's sensible to take her to the vets. At the moment you have no idea of the underlying cause so there's not much point trying to treat it at home. She may have fleas or impacted/infected anal sacs.

Agreed. The most common causes I believe are flea allergic dermitis or full/impacted anal glands. That's not to say that there couldn't be another cause though.
