Going to look at a pup on Monday- help!

Yikes- going to look at a black lab pup on Monday. We weren't planning to get another dog until the spring but the mother of the pups is such a lovely dog and our vet was saying how much he'd love a puppy from her.

There's one girl left so I'm going to see her, without the kids, on Monday. It's just all a bit quick as she's 7 weeks already!

I've never had a lab before and am a bit worried about the shedding everywhere. We're all hard floors downstairs but quite pale. If I Hoover every day and groom her will that be enough to keep on top of it?

Just a bit "eeek" about it all! We lost our puppy to lymphoma in the summer and have just recently started thinking about another dog. Although it's a bit soon, I don't want to miss out on a potentially lovely dog.

How lovely. We have a six month old yellow Labrador boy. Come on over to the new puppy mummies thread. Smile

Lucky you. I have a black lab and he is the most loving, well behaved and loyal dog Smile

But please read this you need to ask these questions and if there is any doubt, walk away....
This website was invaluable to me when I was researching for my lab and the people on it are extremely knowledgeable when it comes labs.

Good luck Smile

Sorry you lost you puppy Sad

Labs are the best!! Lucky lucky you. The hair shedding doesn't have to be bad. One of my labs moults quite badly, but the other one hardly does at all.

Hard hard work, but so gorgeous and worth it.

Labs do shed fairly continuously and then normally have a more major moult twice a year. By brushing regularly you should be able to keep on top of it. The bigger moults are more of an issue, but normally only last for a week and just mean lots of extra hoovering!

We have a black lab and a yellow lab and I find I notice the yellow hairs much more (school uniform, work trousers etc).

Labradors are wonderful dogs and I am very Envy of your potential new puppy!

I tend to look at these scenarios as fate Grin

Just bear in mind you can walk away and there will be other pups (easier said than done)

RosieLig · 28/12/2013 19:41

Thank you all! Yes I agree a bit about fate. When I first called there was only one pup left but people were coming to look at her that day. They were looking for a gun dog and found a pup they thought would suit better. Hope that doesn't mean she's too timid. I'm taking a friend with me to see her and she's very experienced with puppies (does guide dog puppy training).

We wanted a bitch and ended up with a dog! He's lovely. Very gentle, but can also be assertive. He is from FT Champions on both sides and I couldn't imagine not having him.
