he is a wooly bear! he is only 4 months old but he is very hairy - normal brushes and slicker brushes are not going right through his coat.

what is the best brush or comb or rake to get please! i cannot have a tatty looking pooch!

Have you tried a furminator?

Furminators are brilliant for occasional use to fetch the undercoat out but over time they wreck the topcoat so I wouldn't use it as an everyday brush. A coat rake with long teeth works well, Mikki do a decent cheap one, then a slicker to finish.

I have long coated dogs though not GSDs.You need a brush that will get through the length & thickness without breaking the length or ripping out the undercoat, that's why I don't personally like furminators.

Bristle brushes can be used on all coat types, and vary according to the spacing between bristles and the length of the bristles. In general, the longer the hair coat, the more widely spaced and longer the bristles should be. Also, the coarser the hair, the stiffer those bristles need to be.

I use a few different ones. I find this pretty unbeatable for everyday use.
I also have several Chris Christensen brushes for the show coated ones but they can be expensive.
