I am so sick of the poor dog coughing day and night, DH can sleep though it but I wake up at every cough.

DDog turned 5 on Tuesday and had a crap day. He couldn't play with his new toy as every time he moves he coughs Sad

I'm tired and grumpy and just want ddog to stop coughing so I can sleep!

benylin cough syrup - I am pretty sure im not making that up! I am sure i can remember my boss unofficially recommending that to people. But REALLY IMPORTANT to check with your vet first as the dosage will be very different to people and you don't want to OD.

Ear plugs for you?

when my mum's poor dog had kennel cough a few years ago the vet told her to give her honey and glycerin cough medicine. no idea if it helped or what dose though.

LEMisafucker · 05/12/2013 11:03

www.vetinfo.com/give-dog-cough-medicine-people.html This might be useful, has dose rate on there but do check with your vet first.

Twiddlebum · 05/12/2013 11:04

We used benylin as recommended by our vet

Pokeroot · 05/12/2013 11:07

Sadly he is already having childrens cough medicine and honey as per the vets instructions, it's not really helping. DDog really really likes it though!

Vet offered some matacam (sp?) but the dog is allergic to NSAIDs so can't have it.

It's already been a week of coughing, last time he had kennel cough it was nowhere near this bad.

I don't have any ear plugs but I might try some head phones if I can find any.

can buy disposable ear plugs in B&Q, not expensive x

Pokeroot · 05/12/2013 11:19

LEMisafucker There isn't a B&Q in my tiny town and even if there was the weather is horrid and I have no plans to step foot outside today!

I might ask DH to buy me some on his way home from work.

Poor dog is tired too and he hasn't had a walk for a week. I know he feels rubbish because no border collie can go a whole week with no walk, games or training without going insane.

Tixylix always works with mine and he gets KC at least yearly despite being vaccinated ,I assume he has had antibiotics ? Perhaps try a different AB as when ours had the Battersea strain he had to have 2 courses of different ABs to clear it .

Pokeroot · 05/12/2013 13:22

No ABs, the vet didn't think he needed them as his chest was clear on saturday. The cough has got worse since then but its not really bad just annoying. If in gets worse or goes on for much longer we will go back to the vets.

Floralnomad · 05/12/2013 15:04

I'd get the ABs ,as the dog has already been seen it may be worth ringing to see if the vet can leave out a prescription to save taking the dog back ,ours is generally happy to do that .

Lonecatwithkitten · 05/12/2013 15:28

Sadly no magic solution. Kennel cough is caused mainly by viruses so antibiotics are of no use, I never give them unless there is evidence of secondary bacterial infection so yellow green mucus or very high temperature. So don't be surprised if they refuse antibiotics.
So dogs can cough and be infectious for up to 6 weeks - sorry.

Pokeroot · 05/12/2013 15:47

Floral He doesn't need ABs as his chest is clear and he doesn't have a temp. In fact we only went to the vets in the first place to check those things just in case as my dog has shit luck (and multiple health issues).

Lonecat I know there is no real treatment, the dog has had kennel cough before but not this bad. He best not cough all night every night for 6 weeks or I might have to kill him!

One of my old dogs had it awful though one year and started bringing up blood so we had to have medication from the vet, but it was so long ago I can't remember much

Pokeroot · 05/12/2013 17:52

Thanks Owllady.

I can't believe I just gave my dog some liquorice tea. With honey.

What! I was told to take straight to Vet for AB's!!! On MN!!!

twojues · 06/12/2013 07:46

Tixylix 3 times a day followed by a spoonful on manuka honey.

This worked for my 2 dogs. One of them has had kennel cough 3 times.

My lab loves the honey

Pokeroot · 06/12/2013 08:44

Twojues DDog is having tixylix 3 times a day followed by honey but he is still coughing. A lot.

He likes both the honey and the tixylix and will be very sad when he is better and can't have any more.

I was only woken up 3 times by coughing last night so that is an improvement although he has coughed nearly none stop for the last 2 hours. His throat and chest must be really sore by now, poor dog.

BMW6 The only time I have heard of a dog been give ABs for kennel cough is when its gone to their chest or they have a secondry infection.
