Black puppies from fawn parents?

I am looking at some puppies later this week and I just want to check can you get black puppies if both parents are fawn in colour? The mum is a Jug and stud is a Pug. Both been health checked before breeding.

Yes you can. Genetics isn't that straightforward.

Lonecatwithkitten · 12/11/2013 07:40

Even more likely as they are not pure breed as genetic rules of main breed are confused.

I saw a litter recently with a black mother, three black (with white bits), two grey and four merle puppies.

I'd imagine so...I don't know about pugs but in other breeds black is dominant, so if they carry it at all you're likely to get some puppies that are black.

Health checked is NOT the same as health tested!!!!

Yes you can. Typically every few generations of the black pug lines a fawn is re introduced in order to build back stickiness, thickness of coat etc. Tho this is purebreds, so imagine its even more possible with a pug and Jug (jack Russell x pug?). An interesting mix since my pugs nemeses tend to be jack Russells!

PumpingRSI · 12/11/2013 13:07

Stockiness rather.

This. Given some of the disastrous health issues that can be present in pugs I wouldn't even consider puppies from anyone who doesn't go over and above in terms of the required health testing and isn't willing to share detailed health information about the recent ancestors.
