New thread, because quite frankly I can't do without you all :)

OP posts:
moosemama · 21/12/2013 12:03

I've just put a couple of pictures of Pip in his pink leopard print bandages (with additional purple bandage I had to put on when the structural integrity of the leopard print one failed) on my profile.

mintchocchick · 21/12/2013 12:22

He really is a gorgeous boy Moose, made very glam by the bandages!

Minty has not been sick since Thursday or had runs that we've seen since Thursday am. Meds go on until Monday. He has wolfed down chicken, rice, scrambled egg so far today and no problems. But is still laying on bed with very little interest in anything except a cuddle or stroke.

The smell is high pitched sort of sharp smell. I am keeping an eye on him for now, vets as an urgent thing if needs be of course otherwise will get appointment for Monday if still floppy.

Have any of you got Christmas pressies for your pups?!

Reup - minty was car sick on first journey home, not surprising really, first time being chucked about in a car, must be horrid for them. He'll be fine once home - expect him to sleep LOADS in first few days!

reup · 21/12/2013 12:35

I have! I saw they had a dog section in poundstretcher so got lots of things including a squeaky father Xmas and a squeaky wrapped present. I was tempted by the dog outfits for the photo op but stopped myself - maybe Xmas cards next yr!
I remember always getting a huge chew for my childhood dog and wrapping like a cracker. He was very good at not touching it. Except when he was very old. It was his penultimate Xmas and he must have thought sod it am going to enjoy myself and he tore open his own present and s similar shape one which was a bottle of wine.

reup · 21/12/2013 12:37

Love pips plaster pic. Am desperate to take some pics and send them to people but he's a black dog in a dark travel crate do you can't see him!

moosemama · 21/12/2013 12:44

Reup, it's quite common for them to be sick on their journey home, the combination of stress and the motion of the car usually does it. It doesn't necessarily follow that they'll always be car sick. Glad he's home safe. Don't forget to upload some photos for us! Xmas Grin

If he's eating and hasn't had a reoccurrence of the d&v then he's probably ok. Poor lad, hope he perks up soon.

We've never bothered with Christmas prezzies for our dogs before, but I have to confess to having been a total softie and bought a couple for Pip. I've got him this plush cover for crunchy water bottles that looks remarkably like him Xmas Grin and one of these crunchy balls, although I suspect he's going to love shredding the wrapping paper just as much, if not more than the presents. I've also bought Lurcherboy two squeaky tennis balls, as there is nothing he loves more than a tennis ball.

moosemama · 21/12/2013 12:45

Cross posted reup. We'll have to wait for our puppy photos fix till he wakes up then. Xmas Grin

basildonbond · 21/12/2013 12:46

Hope your first day goes well reup - Fitz was sick twice on the way back from the breeder plus had diarrhoea (lovely) but has never been sick again (touch wood). We didn't take him out in the car for the first few days then did lots of work give him positive associations with his travel crate and he's been fine ever since

Wow moose, that's some look Grin

reup · 21/12/2013 14:01

Well we got him out of the crate to go in the garden and he just shook and stood between my husbands legs, he hasn't pooed or weeed. He came back in and just wanted to sit on us. He had some food though. I think we have a very soppy shy one! I will feel a bit more relaxed when he wagged his tail and gone to the loo.

GhostsInSnow · 21/12/2013 21:46

Good news....Alfie is fast asleep on the rug snoring. He was perfect (all barring a little bald patch on his nose where he's been scrapping with his litter mates), he is a little sod, full of spark and was the first at my feet (trying to eat my boot) when I walked in.

Pics tomorrow when I stand half a chance of keeping him still....
Grin

reup · 21/12/2013 22:36

That's great news juice.

Mine has perked up a lot and is running around exploring and going under sofas. He's done 2 wees inside , 2 outside and a poo outside. Not ate that much though.

YourCallIsImportant · 21/12/2013 22:42

Can I join you? I became a new puppy mummy on Thursday to a 7 week old Hungarian Viszla called Cinnamon.

reup · 21/12/2013 22:43

Have put a new pic up. Its hard photographing black dogs!

mintchocchick · 22/12/2013 00:21

Wow juice - is Alfie your new pup? Exciting!

Reup - your chap looks lovely.

We are so excited in our household as minty is biting our slippers again and being a real pain with leaping up at us and grabbing our clothes! We have never been so delighted to have our naughty pup back on top form! Sounds very irresponsible of us, and of course we're not encouraging this behaviour, but it's a sign he's well again after a week of sickness.

I plan first proper walk tomorrow - it's been weird not walking him last week and I felt kind of lonely on the way back from school with no dog alongside. I fear I am turning into that mad woman you see talking to her dogs about the weather and all sorts!

Kibble has also been eaten so another good sign. DH looked at me sideways when I cooked yet another chicken breast for him after the scrambled eggs for breakfast - but then he used to give me though looks when I bought organic salmon for DS1 as a toddler and ordinary salmon for us!

basildonbond · 22/12/2013 07:13

Wow juice - that's so exciting! What's your dd's reaction been (I know it wasn't a surprise anymore, but still )

Reup - he looks v cute

Mint - good news re minty - I hope you enjoy your walk - it was weird not walking Fitz last week but he sooo enjoyed getting out again

Moose - hope Pip's on the mend

And yourcall - welcome to the thread - we need pictures ... Cinnamon was on dd's list of names for our pup (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, so another reddish dog) but the boys vetoed it

New pic up on my profile - he cocked his leg for the first time yesterday so my little puppy is really growing up

GhostsInSnow · 22/12/2013 10:15

yes, somewhere between picking him up and home he became Alfie.
he was home bred, the breeder owned both mum and dad (who were lovely dogs I add with lovely temperaments) but I do think she had a bit of a blase approach to breeding. she said he was due for worming today so I did worm him last night,I was a bit sceptical anyway as he had a puppy pot belly so I wasn't surprised to find wormy poos on the kitchen paper this morning.
seems to have perked him up somewhat though and he's a lot livelier today (I'd that's possible!)
going to see if our very can take a quick look at him tomorrow for me,I did try and book him in for injections but she's full until after Christmas but I think nurse will have a quick look at him for me.
I'm not worried especially but I'd rather someone had a quick look at him for me.

GhostsInSnow · 22/12/2013 10:16

Basildon, Dd is over the moon with him. she is currently on the sofa, Alfie snoozing on her knee, reading the prefect puppy.Grin Grin Grin

reup · 22/12/2013 10:30

Basildon - he's lovekyy

We survived the 1st night. We have a travel crate that we left open that we put in a sectioned off area if the kitchen diner. He cried a little bit then went quiet. Didnt hear him all nighty then in morning came down and he had wriggled under the dog gate have no idea when he did that! Luckily we had puppy proofed the rest of the room too. Had about 3 wees and a poo to clear up and he was v pleased to see us. Not sure what to do tonight - crate zipped in our room or downstairs?
He's not eating much yet. Got vaccinations this pm.

thinkingaboutfostering · 22/12/2013 11:24

Can I come and join you? I pick up my labrador x huntaway puppy on Saturday. She will be called Luna. She will be my first dog so ver excited and a bit nervous!

GhostsInSnow · 22/12/2013 12:02

reup, glad you had a quiet night. Alfie had a bit of a moan when I locked him in the kitchen but soon settled and we heard nothing more until 8.30am when wanted his breakfast and a play. he'd done a couple of poos and a wee but all on his paper. I think our breeder must have used paper because he seems to know what its for.
add is by the back door as well we know when he heads there is time to go out Grin

reup · 22/12/2013 12:05

Had never heard of a huntaway. So googled and they look a lot like my childhood dog. He was a rescue puppy and looked like a small black lab but with a slightly narrower face but with tan paws and eyebrows. We thought he must have had German shepherd or Rottweiler in him but maybe it was huntaway.

We just tried zipping puppy up in travel crate with a kibble stuffed kong. He showed no interest in kong and yelped a lot. We waited till he calmed down to let him out.

Hope we find some food to motivate him for training as he's not much interested in the food the breeder used (we bough a massive bag of it too!) he was one of the biggest in the litter so he must have are it! Maybe he misses the tussles with his siblings at food times!

He is very keen on laps and looks adoringly at the sofa. We let him up only when there's a fleece on there.

moosemama · 22/12/2013 12:32

Blimey, I have one night off and I can't keep up with the thread. So lovely to hear all the stories of new pups. Welcome to YourCall and thinkingabout

Reup, he's gorgeous! Xmas Grin

Juice, I am so happy for you and your family. Alfie sounds fantastic. I love that terrier spirit and it's extra cute in puppies. Love the name as well. Xmas Smile

Basildon, he look so lovely in that photograph. How could you refuse him anything with a face like that? Xmas Grin

Pip is feeling much better today. His leg is a mess, but the swelling has gone down significantly and he's using it now, albeit a little stiffly and he's back to playing with his toys and mercilessly annoying Lurcherboy. We're back at the vets tomorrow morning for both dogs' passport tapeworm pills and for Pip to have his leg checked again.

He seems to be maturing slightly, in that he keeps taking us by surprise and not waking till 8.00 am. He's always woken us between 6.15 and 6.30 for a wee in the morning, but would then take himself back to his crate and sleep again till we get up at 8.00 at the weekend, but the last few days he's slept through till 8.00 without waking us. Feels like a real luxury not to have to get so early at the weekends. Xmas Grin

He still doesn't cock his leg, but then neither does Lurcherboy, despite being neutered after he was fully mature.

GhostsInSnow · 22/12/2013 17:29

He's had a settled day, play, sleep, eat, play sleep etc. Currently flat out in a folding travel crate while I cook and catch up on some work. He howled the house down for the first ten minutes in it, but he's calmed down nicely now.

Lots of visitors today to play with, he's especially fond of shoelaces. Wee's in the garden are few and far between (he seems to wait until I walk back in, then wee on his paper grrr) but it's early days.

I've given him a tiny bit of broken bonio today in a dog saver toy, he spent a happy half hour trying to firk it out. Not entirely sure he's supposed to have bonio yet but it was barely a 20p piece size so I figured we'd be ok with that.

Glad Pip is feeling better!

Heres Alfie, he had a mad half hour on the rug (he LOVES the rug for some reason, I was going to lift it up but it's his favourite spot) then he collapsed on his reindeer snoring.

reup · 22/12/2013 17:50

Aah they're lovely when they're sleeping - like children.

We tried him zipped in crate and he cried a bit (so did my son!) but was then ok. Can't decide whether to leave him in puppy proofed area or zip him up in crate. He did a it 3-4 wees and a poo between 12 & 7. If he's zipped up in a crate will he cry to go out to wee? How long can they not go for? Yesterday he didn't do anything for 6 hours in the daytime but he was tired/stressed.

Still not v into food. Hasn't looked at stuffed kong. We bought some puppy freeze dried chicken liver treats and vet suggested bits of boiled chicken.

No visitors but we went to pets at home do he got lots of admiration. We also played the whole of the sound effect cd for dogs that someone gave me. He didn't bat an eyelid then jumped when I dropped a box!

NigellasTinsellyGuest · 22/12/2013 19:34

my new pup is on my profile!

he's been in the back garden on the lead this afternoon and did very well, I was very proud of him. He's not weeing or pooing outside though, just on the floor in the house Hmm

reup · 22/12/2013 19:48

Nigella he's very sweet.

Talking of leads. We've got one but some people prefer harnesses. I wasn't sure why. It is better?
