which would be the best in car safety travel system for him - i have a very old corsa, he wont fit in the boot bit when he is fully grown. (he is a GSD)

So far we have only done one small trip out to the pet shop locally - and he laid on the back seat.

is the only option a doggy seat belt? if so, which one is best?

when i change the car (which will be soon i think) i will be looking at bigger cars so i can have a cage fitted in the boot.

but for now - i need to find something to keep him safe in the (small) car.

Could you put him in the footwell of passenger seat with his lead tied around the door handle with enough slack so he can sleep on the floor but not enough for him to climb onto seat or reach you driving?

We do exactly that with our OES puppy who is too big for a backseat but seems too small to go in the boot without a crate. I used to treat him whenever he laid his head down in footwell and now he climbs in, flops down and settles without a fuss and without treats. Would that work for you?

He needs to be contained in some way to stop him flying through the car in the event of an accident. So yes in your current car a dog seat belt is the best arrangement.

The only crash tested harness that I know of is made by Bergan, if you google Bergan safety harness you should find it.

I've got a Fiesta and a Rottie - I found it wasn't the size of the boot, but getting him in and out of it that became a problem as he grew, lol.

I have a golden retriever and he will only sit up on a seat so he can look out of the window. He went insane in the boot and was sick and had diarrhoea. He is fine with his harness on. Agree that big dogs find it hard to get up into the boot anyway.

I was a bit ambivalent about securing dogs in the car - but then someone I know had a terrible car accident when their dog suddenly leapt out of the footwell. They were in hospital for months with severe internal injuries.

I used a fantastic dog seatbelt harness for years - my GSD lounged about on the back seat ruining it with his hair and loved being able to see out the windows.

Now he goes in the boot of my freelander. He struggles to jump in, as it's high, but you won't have that problem for a few years.

It also meant I could reach back and stroke him whenever I wanted - I actually miss that contact now he's all the way in the boot

I have a short clip thing, got it in Pets at Home, that attaches the harness my little ones wear to the seat belt anchors in the rear seat. The others go in the back of my Landrover.

Just as an aside, I used to transport my goats to be mated by the billy in the back seat of my ancient Mini with the seat cushion removed.

I used to carry my Weimaraner in the back seat of a Citroen C1! A clip seat-belt harness is what you need.
