Anyone know about strollers for injured dogs?

Hi all,

My 11 yr old Boston Terrier has an ongoing back problem: it's intermittent and most of the time he's fine, but when it flares up his mobility is impaired. We manage the condition through preventative measures, rest and pain meds.

The condition isn't going to disappear and will probably get worse as he gets older so I'm thinking about getting a dog stroller for him so I can take him out and about (and it would be helpful for getting him to the vet too as I don't have a car).

Trouble is, he's a bit too big for one of the pushchair style ones, and he's not really big enough for one of the larger bike trailer ones. He's large for his breed - about the size of a small staffie and he weighs around 15-16 kg.

I'm looking at something like this one: Doggyhut Medium

or this: Pet Gear AT3 Roadster

or the standard size Petmobil (old lady shopping trolley alert!): Petmobil

There's also this more buggy-like one: Pet Gear Happy Trails

But I think that last one may be too small (it says max load 13kg).

Anyone got any advice/had any experience of any of these dog strollers? I'd be grateful for any thoughts/recommendations, thanks :)

We have used the doggyhut for a 28 kilo lab after a cruciate operation. It was fab. It was very mobile and pretty easy to push on off road terrain. It was quite big as we had the large one.

It had quick release wheels and the handle had to be detached to fit into the car but was very easy to put together again.

We walked the south east coast path with it over 250 miles this summer so would recommend it Smile Our dog loved it.....after a bit of clicker training to get him used to it.

Would you take your dog into a shop in one of these? Could it be an alternative to those who leave their dogs tied up outside/in the car?

Aside from that, the Petmobil one looks horrible (sorry) also doesn't look like the dog could lie down comfortably. Might be just me though.

I like the happy trails one, if it was big enough for your dog.

The pet gear one looks pretty good too.

I agree that the Petmobil one looks bloody awful Grin

Thanks for the feedback on the Doggyhut one idirdog - your 250 mile expedition sounds amazing! I think I'm going to go for that one as it's a good price, the stroller kit is included, and going by your experience it's going to be sturdy enough for my needs (no rough terrain around here to negotiate).

Good point about going into shops: not sure if the Doggyhut stroller would be too big/unwieldy for that but it'd certainly be handy to be able to pick up shopping while out with the dog.

That's what I thought Raia

DH and DM think I'm mad. I have a little doggy and think it would be handy! DH asked if I'm on drugs...
