Love both and both very different. What would you recommend and WHY?
We have two DC - 5&6 years old.
Will be in large backyard in Oz.

and boy or girl? or does that not really matter?

Why would you have a family pet that you then leave on it's own all the time?

If you've got more than one and they're working dogs that live outside, fair enough, but leaving a dog on it's own is pretty much frowned upon these days.

We have 2 wonderful cavs who are left at home 3 days a week, but they are inseparable so they have each other. When I work from home they wander off together and I don't see them for hours! We wouldn't leave one home alone, though, sorry.

Ours do jog OP! Dp takes them for 1km jog most nights. They are fit as fleas and love it, although dp does get some funny looks. They are not exactly up there will cockers/collies in the 'cool running companion' category!

Running cavs love it!

Might rethink/think home alone thing. (Off to work thing at least-daytime dog walker option!

oh sorry i didn't realise you were going to leave a cocker home alone by itself all day. mine would hate that. they are such socialable dogs and love being with their owners. mine would sit by the door all day waiting for me to come home. i don't think that would work well at all.

With the dog walker/daycare caveat then a working cocker everytime. We've just got our second pup (lost our beloved Jake in May) and they are just the most lovely dogs. Like someone said upthread every day is Christmas day to a cocker.

Cavaliers can be very active - mine certainly are. But leaving a dog especially a young dog for extended lengths of time is not really fair at all imo.

I am biased. Have had a cocker spaniel ever since I was a kid. I think mum had a male and then his family lives on..
They are lovely, smart, affectionate, licky, loyal, active dogs.
Nothing beats a cocker, chocolate labs come close but..nah!
