How aware/concerned should new owners be about kennel cough

I'm kind of processing here so may be rambling. My 8 month pup was diagnosed with KC last week, now she hadn't had the vaccine as she wasn't going into kennels at all, she was going to a home boarder, so stupidly I thought that was it.

The ewok coughed up bile 11pm on Tues night and did the same Wed morning, (24hr later we were meant to take her to home boarder so we could go to Camp Bestiva, luckily not a week abroad) so by 9.30 Wed I was at vets who said she had KC and gave antibio immediately for week.

I was stunned as her only interaction with other dogs is a hello in the park with owners that are ok with it, yet that interaction meant we would have had to cancel our holiday but luckily my in laws took responsibility and it worked out fine, the ewok was happy as larry with them.

So a week later and we've been back a few days the ewok is fine make a funny noise once or twice a day. I'm avoiding other dogs like the plague on walks and in a fortnight she's booked in for vaccine, ( she starting her bronze training in Sept at a kennels) she was meant to go back to the boarder for a night that week for the BH weekend but I've said to boarder she doesn't have to so I'm waiting to hear back.

I think what my post is trying to say is that luckily for the ewok she hasn't been that poorly but apparently can be contagious for some time yet and so the disruption it has caused has left me wondering if I should do anything differently from now on

Were you offered the vaccine when she had her puppy vaccs? It's not considered a core vaccine but we always discuss it as despite the name it's v contagious in your average meet and greet at the park situation. For most dogs and most owners they will not be particularly unwell with it so it's not in the same category as parvovirus, for example, but it can still be a major PITA.
Hope Ewok is better soon and you had a good time at Camp Bestival ( we went, it was fab)

Labdog picked up kennel cough on a walk.
I was advised to keep him away from other dogs for a few weeks. Liased with the neighbours so labdog and their dog weren't out at the same time.
He was very young at the time about 4-5mths so resorted to walking him round and round our garden on his lead. Or taking him out at a time when there were fewer dogs out, and crossing away when we did see one.

Unfortunately not all owners are responsible enough keep their dogs quarantined when they have contagious conditions.

Our vets offer it at boosters but it wasn't offered at the 1st vacs.

Thanks all, No it never got mentioned at vets during initial vaccines.

I posted this as it really i was thinking about what a funny situation is, I mean I would never say to my girls " see that little girl who is full of snot and coughing, why don't you go say hello and play with her. Look her mums smiling it'll be fine to go over", but I feel like, due to me wanting the ewok to be able to behave appropriately with other dogs, that's exactly what I've done with the ewok. Should I start being more cautious? I don't know

But yes Bakingtins, once we knew the ewok was fine we had a great time at CB again and I think ill be booking again tomorrow.

I discuss it at primary vaccination course after a puppy training class had a particularly vicious strain whip through it causing some of the pups to be very poorly.
My own dog I ensure he is always covered as he does agility so could get infected at shows or training.

I regularly board, so mine have to have their kennel cough vacs up to date. I've heard it can be quite nasty in young puppies and elderly dogs.
