How to deal with terrible separation anxiety

I know it's early days, we've only had our dog 3 weeks, but I feel tearful and trapped due to her severe neediness!

She's sleeping in a crate in DDs room, as she cannot sleep alone, will literally cry all night.
If she's left for even a minute on her own, she's whimpering at the door.
We've not left her at all yet, other than nipping upstairs- if I've had to go out DD (14) has sat with her.

I don't want her to feel scared, but she needs to be left sometimes (only for 30 min or so at first)

What do I do?
Is it ok to let her cry in her crate if I nip out? It seems so harsh! :(

She's a 7 moth old rescue pup.

Sorry to be so thick about it. Never dealt with this before.

I've just bought a thunder shirt for my girl as she gets upset over fireworks and traveling. It apparently reduces separation anxiety too but I don't have any evidence. Google it and see what you think. We have a 5 hour car journey on Friday so I'm hoping it works for us.

Thanks binger-will have a look now!

Hope it works for your journey.

I did a thread a while back - haven't re-read it but my thoughts probably haven't changed a great deal in the interim. :)
