helping a new dog settle in while we try to find a forever Home

hi all we have a staffie who we let have a litter of puppies 2 1/2 years ago. we found good homes for all the puppies and kept one ourselves, so we now have 2 staffies. we were contacted today by one of the owners of one of the puppies ( now hulking 2 1/2 yr old) to say they have to move and can't take him with them and did we know of anyone looking for a dog.we told them we would have him back and try to regime him. we are responsible for him being here after all. I know that our dogs. are his mum and brother, but they will have forgotten that, so any tips and advice on helping him settle in and on finding a good home for him, which I know will be harder than the cute little puppy he was.

I think people are assuming this is a wind up and you're trying to cause a ruckus, so they're wisely following the "if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all" rule.
If you really are genuine I've got advice - find a good rescue and offer to
donate enough money to cover their costs for reforming the dog properly. Agree to keep the dog until a home is found.
A behaviourist could advise you on how to deal with any problems while the dog is with you, this will cost money of course.
Neuter all the dogs you own.

as far as I'm aware there are no behavioural issues with the dog they are moving home and unable to take him with them. I feel responsible for the dog and am trying to do the sensible thing and have him back and try to find a new home for him. we had our girl spayed after she had the pups. Dhabi was instant on her having littler before being spayed ( I know not the most sensible thing to do) , but most of the pups went to family and friends and those that didn't we have tried keeping in touch with. only 2 of the pups we never heard back from. we also kept one and have had him neutered.

I was after advice on getting my 2 already adult dogs and a new dog to get used to each other, just the same as of we had taken any other adult dog into our house.

Maybe if you had a chat to a Staffie specific rescue now they might be able to give you some tips? We had our present dog from Rescue Remedies who run a Staffie service alongside other breeds. I've noticed that the rescue dogs that go into them are often fostered with other Staffies ( Dear little Ada on their site at the moment is with 3 others) so they must know how to achieve harmony when new dog joins a group.

I have tried emailing some staffie rescues but haven't heard anything back from them.
I'll look later see if I can phone them for advice instead thanks x

I phoned a rescue she said she had 89 Sad on the books looking for New homes and if I send her details and photo she will add him online with the others. she also said that it was good we are going to take him in as we bread him as a lot don't care after they have gone.
the owner says he is a very good dog very loyal ( as staffies are) has no behaviour issues and they are very sad about him having to go Sad

Sadly the rescues are overflowing with Staffies.

I was reading a really shocking account from a rescue the other day who said they can't keep all the dogs they get so they have to decide which dogs are more likely to be rehomed.....others are put to sleep. Any staffy type is pts immediatly on arrival. Sad

I think it's good that you're taking him back.....you may have him for some time. You could try and find a no kill rescue to take him.

Please don't breed anymore puppies.

no we are not breading anymore only the one litter all dogs and cats here have spayed and neutred.
it's a shame staffies are not wanted they are lovely dogs. just have a bad name Sad

Indeed, after decades of being "hound people" we found our true vocation as dog owners with an elderly threadbare Staffie and now we wouldn't have anything else. Unfortunately present incumbent really does not get on with other dogs at all ( but loves all people) so I can't offer your dear boy a home. Do post again if you struggle to rehome.

just for anyone interested we now have Rocky with us he is a lovely dog good with the kids and the cats gets on ok with our girl dog ( his mum ) and we are taking things slow with our boy dog there is a bit of tension between them. he is neutred and chipped we just need to get his vaccinations up to date. we have got q local rescue onboard who will take him over with us as his foster home. which is good as they will help make sure he gets the right home. thanks all
