Help. How do I get these pills into my dog.

My dog is on an antibiotic, half a pill once a day, and each day the whole thing is becoming more traumatic for both of us.

I started out by crushing them, but my vet told me that's not the best thing to do, and anyway, she soon decided she wouldn't take them like that as clearly they have a strong flavour and I suspect are very bitter. For the same reasons she can't/won't chew them.

I have tried using the syringe pill giver that I use for the cat (medicate cat successfully twice a day) but that sent her into a state of panic and now is pretty much useless, likewise lifting her muzzle and trying to pop it into her mouth.

I've smothered them in smoked salmon, peanut butter, cheese and several other things. Sometimes all at the same time.

She's a small dog and very wriggly so difficult to hold (I live on my own) and if I watch one more 'how to' video of a large calm dog being given medicine by a vet to show you how easy it is I shall scream.

Please, does anyone have any magic way of getting round this. I'm beginning to feel she's going to end up hating me at the end of the several weeks/months that's she's going to be on these things.

Thank you all so much for your input.

I've tried to sling them down her throat without treats as well. I think that oddly enough the fact that she's small makes it a bit more difficult. With a bigger dog you can be a bit heavier handed iyswim. When her head's flying around (think the Exorcist) you can't just grab and hold on.

I've never had this trouble before with other pills, even antibiotics. I think it's just this particular pill, as I said before, I think it must be particularly unpleasant and bitter.

I'm going to try taking her by surprise with the them and up the quantity and flavour of the things I use to disguise them. She's not terribly food orientated either, so that also doesn't help. She's got to have them so I'm going to have to win this one.
