Dogs go through a bit of regression around 12 months right???

Have a 12 month old golden, who in the last few weeks, has decided it's great fun to jump up on DH and I and hump us. He used to do this a little while ago but trained him to stop but its back.

He's not neutered yet as 1. As a large breed I wanted to wait until he was 18 months and 2. He's had some developmental/growth issues and the vet advised that we wait.

He is a teenager, it's normal

Maybe he gets frustrated now he's nearly grown up . We waited till our lab was 2 before neutering, he never humped anything apart from his bed, discretely located in the utility room so we didn't have to watch. He didn't do it that often (approx every few weeks) but when he did it was a lengthy session and the floor and bed, fortunately waterproof, needed a good clean afterwards . Dog would lie on floor panting and looking pleased with himself. As soon as he was neutered he stopped doing it.

Please don't get him neutered too early though, there's evidence that a lot of hip dysplasia occurs in male goldens especially, because they're neutered before the hip plates have a chance to fuse together properly at around 18-24 months so you're quite right to wait. Our boy has just turned two and we had him neutered at around 20 months, it's definitely calmed the humping behaviour.

We had this problem with our lab from the age of 11 months until about 16 months old. He peed indoors several times which he had never done before but grew out of it thankfully and as for humping, his preference was definitely DH

We still havent had him neutered even though he is 2 and a half because he has such a lovely temperament and the vet thinks it will increase his chance of obesity and the risk of dysplasia.

He isnt a problem so we have left him well alone, as for our JRT his nads will be off as soon as we get the ok from the vet!

Your dog sounds perfectly normal and is just testing the boundaries before settling down again.

Thanks all. Good to know there's an end in sight! I really didnt want to get him neutered too soon but was getting slightly frustrated (6months pregnant and hormonal!)

He actually seems to be slightly improved. Some of the problem with him seems to occur when he gets over stimulated so once things are calm, he's calm.
