Really need help with toilet training my collie :(

Ddog is now 23 wo. He is a brill dog. Ace with everything. Was really easy to toilet train etc.. but.. he was crate trained at night and when we left him in the day (never for more than a couple of hours at weekend. And even then DP would be in bed due to him working nights). As he was doing so brilliantly we decided to leave the cage door open.. after 3 days of having dry and clean floors in the morning we took the cage down (he stopped sleeping in it anyway). Fast forward to now and he has started to wee and poo on the living room rug. It's now ruined :(.. we have now put a stairgate on the kitchen door to stop him getting into the living room.. but I really don't know what else to do. I don't want to crate him again.

So wise mners any ideas?

I don't want him in there as we are going away at Christmas and we haven't got room in the car for the crate.. plus I don't think he'd go back to going back in once he's out..

Go back to basics...

Firstly, wash the carpet with biogical washing powder to get the smell out. If he can smell it, it will say 'toilet' to him.

What time do you put him out in the evening? Try letting him out at 11.30pm for last wee and/or poo. Supervise if you have to, to ensure that he's done it.

Get up at 5.30am and let him out for a wee/poo.

If he hasn't done a wee or poo -huge fuss. If he has, clean up with no fuss.

If he goes several days with no wee/poo doing this, then get up at 6am, etc. Similarly, you'll be able to let him out a little earlier, and so on.

Patch was, bizarrely, dry at night from day 1. He took until he was about 9 months to be consistent in the day though, especially if the weather was bad (because he's a wuss).

can you not collapse the crate and put it on top of the car to travel down with?

I am new to crate training but it's bloody brilliant imo. I am a complete convert

If you are going away for Christmas with a young collie pup to a new place I would absolutely get the crate back out.

He will feel much more relaxed, comfortable if he has his own place that he is familiar with, you can relax and not have to get up at 5.30 to let him out.

Christmas is fraught with dangers for young dogs so a crate where he can truely relax would be great.

He doesn't wee and pop when he uses the crate I know what I would do -

Hi all. Thanks for replying. We have now had 3 nights with no accidents so I think the kitchen thing is working.

In regards to the holiday he is going to be in the kitchen area there too with my mums and nans dogs. We truly wouldn't be able to take the cage with us. It's massive!

I have had to replace the rug as it was sort of grass like and I felt I couldn't clean it properly and with my 13mo being on the floor a lot I didn't think it was very hygienic.

I will have update you all tomorrow morning on the poo front.
