1st night with new pup- what to expect?

We brought our gorgeous 8 week old shih tzu/bichon frise pup home tonight-sooooooooo cute!
He's cage trained and will go in ther to sleep, but I'm not sure what to expect overnight. He's in the kitchen, which is quite far from any of the bedrooms, should I expect to be wakened by him overnight? Is it pretty much like having a new baby in the house? Should I go to bed now in case I'm up with him half the night?
Despite all the reading I've done, I still don't know what I might encounter overnight!

I found this really hard too. Our doodle pup wasn't crate trained, but I wanted him in a crate. He went to bed the first night about 11, and I got up at some point in the night and woke him up and took him out for a wee, he didn't wee an wasn't that happy about being woken up. This continued for 3 or 4 nights. I quickly worked out he didn't need a wee, but he hated the crate. I gave up on the crate at about that point and just left him in the dining room, where he still sleeps. He's never had an accident.

But I think it's one of thoese thing that you don't know til you try. What did his breeder say, is he used to being got up in the night? Has he been crated overnight before?

If in doubt and the bedrooms are a long way from him then I'd get up about 3 hours after he goes to bed and see if he needs a wee. x

could you not put the crate nearer to (or in) your bedroom for a few nights?

I'm a softie and our Lolly puppy sleeps in her soft comfy, full of blankets warm bed right next to my side of the bed

We got our lab pup at 7 weeks. She woke in the night and cried to get out to do her business. It was quite hard going for a few weeks but fortunately we got her at the end of june so it was warm and the days long. You just have to suck it and see really. We crate trained her and it has worked brilliantly.

I agree with kormachameleon. Once pup has been out, ignore for a good few hours if they cry. They soon get the message that you are in control.
