We have three Grin

But they are working sheepdogs so our set up is a bit different. They are phenomenally intelligent, mindreading, hard working animals, who are also incredibly stupid at times and will do anything for a ball or stick (OH has to negotiate with Top Dog over whether she can take her football with her on the quadbike).

I admire anyone who has one for a pet!

travellingwilbury · 14/09/2012 18:08

I would love one but I am too lazy , those buggered need a lot of space and running and training .

SecretNutellaFix · 14/09/2012 18:11

Get him into puppy classes and start him on agility/flyball if you want to have any house left.

Solid rubber toys, only!!!!

On the other hand, so loyal and loving and sometimes as thick as pigshit.

Hell, I miss my old girl so much, but have no time to give to one.
She protected my mum after her knee ops so well, and would make mum play with her so helping mum's physiotherapy! She would also take herself off for a 20 minute walk around the block if she felt like it.
She allowed herself to be used as a plaything for my Sister's godson and never once growled at him.
She had a thing for paper and oh God, the destruction she could wreak with a single crisp packet!!
She worked out how the drop down bread bin worked and stole a whole loaf of bread once and was really upset that mum changed it for a lidded one!
She was a master negotiator with the family cats and persuaded one of them to push nearly a whole tier of my wedding cake from my mum's wardrobe top shelf (cool and dark). She ate the whole thing and didn't eat for two days afterwards.

Our border collie is the best dog ... I love her so much I can't really express it in words! As a pup she was a stroppy little sod, but it all comes good in the end!

I had a miscarriage earlier this year and honestly the dog really helped me through it. She never left my side, and when I needed a reason to get up in the morning, she was it! She is so clever, so loyal and has a keen sense of humour as well. I love her so much.

My grandma loves to tell us about her old border collie. Her husband threw a chicken carcass in the bin, and my grandma and DH were upstairs and all they heard was a click. They went down to find Meg sat there looking at them as if to say 'What, me?'. They looked in the bin, no carcass. So not only had she nicked the chicken and ate it, but she put the bin back aswell!

We have 3. They are absolutely fantastic. 2 are now quite old and a bit doddery. We have been through several severe learning curves with them and dealt with problems that were not of our making. I love watching their minds work things out. Ours are not kept as working dogs, but are from working stock. They are fantastic. Put in the work at the beginning and you will have a fabulous friend and confidante forever. Our bitch is very sneaky. The boys are a bit obvious, but great fun. I never thought I'd be a collie owner, but now I don't think I'd be without one.

I have a border collie (some pics on profile)

She is often horrible around other dogs but otherwise lovely and obedient, she loves her agility.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 14/09/2012 19:15

Actually there's only one on my profile and she's hidden in the grass Grin

3 colllies here and 2 so called fosters (been here a while though). I love all dogs but once you have had a collie you will always want a collie Smile So intelligent, so quick to learn and absolutely luuuuuuuurve their owners.

Great dogs always up for fun and training but so easy to tire out, they learn to chill as quickly as they learn to do agility Smile

Even if they do have a few bad habits just get their favourite toy and you can train other behaviour so quickly.

Brilliant to do agility, working trials, obedience, and just having fun you can't have too many collies Grin

We do have the time and a good garden. He's defiantly going to puppy training on tuesday. He already had a shih zu, border terrier and a rottie friend Grin

I can't wait take him for a run!

My friend has an 8 year old border collie who is everyone's favourite dog. It makes me laugh when I watch visitors come in their house because they always stop to love the dog and forget about the people! By all accounts she was naughty when she was young and stole whole cakes, etc. But now she's an angel who plays with the kids beautifully and is amazingly responsive. I get so excited when we can dog-sit her!

Craftymoo · 17/09/2012 22:14

Ahhhhh! Another border collie boast here! We have a eight year old bitch, renowned with us 3 years ago. She is definitely my dog, despite DH walking her! She loves to sleep on shoes, nose wedged right down into them, or on towels or sheets if she can pitch them off the airer or towel rail.
She loves chewing, but only her own toys- we should buy shares in the rawhide chew industry. When I was in bed with flu she would not leave my side (and now sleeps next to the bed, which was banned before). I'll stop now, but could waffle for ages about how fab she is.

reddaisy · 17/09/2012 22:22

We had a border collie once and she was cleverer than most people I know. She was a red one and beautiful. It was so hard when she died as she was a best friend and a family member all in one. She was so loyal and funloving and would do anything for one more game of fetch! She needed lots and lots of walks but I always enjoyed taking her out. I still miss her Sad
