He is 3 years old and was rushed to the vets today with yellow skin, eyes, gums, 2 lumps on his neck and difficulty breathing. The vet fear he has jaundice and are running tests on him. The results aren't back yet but he is responding to treatment but is not out of the woods yet.
They are keeping him overnight and my sister has to phone tomorrow morning for an update.

The only medication he receiving from the vets is steroids.

i think some steroids can cause tummy upsets.

maybe your sister could mention the slippery elm and milk thistle to the vet - some vets have an interest in alternative remedies. even if her vet doesn't, she could do some research and take some info in on her next visit to discuss with them and see what they think. there are a few holistic vet sites online that give a lot of info.

hopefully, like behind's sam, he won't have any ongoing issues once he is over this.

ceres - Sam is on slippery elm. I did not mention it to OP as I had missed the bit about the sensitive tum.
We give Sam slippery elm every time he begins to get a bit loose. It ususally does the trick, we only have to resort to steroids in more severe cases now Smile
It is fantastic stuff!

Quick update.
He has lost some more weight but the vet isn't too concerned about that. They are reducing his steroids and will see him in 7 days to see how he is getting on. My sis is worried about reducing the steroids, he was on 4 a day and the vet wants to do 2 every other day. We assume the vet knows what they are doing, so we'll just have to hope he doesn't deteriorate.

Sadly he didn't improve, the vet decided there was nothing more they could do for him and he has been pts Sad
I am so gutted for my sister and nephews. I know how we felt when our puppy died young, its heartbreaking and very difficult to come to terms with.
