we picked up our little whippet puppy today. we were told he was 8 weeks but now after getting him he seems really small! both my previous dogs were rescue at over a year old so i dont havd a basis for puppy size to go on, can anyone tell me how big approximately he should be? i 'll feel awful if he is youngef than that Sad

Well how big is he? There is some natural variation. In puppies under 5 weeks the iris can look a blue tinge, otherwise its hard to be sure. Did the home seem reputable? Do you have any other reason to think they are not being honest?

tennesseyhennessey · 02/09/2012 19:57

oh dear yes, giving his size would help! he is 12" from nose to bum and stands about 8" tall. he is a blue whippet x bedlington and has blue eyes but after googling that it seems normal for blue whippets to have blue eyes. no nothing really stood out as dodgy. i think i may be being a bit pfb as although not our first dog, he is our first puppy!

Congratulations on your new puppy Smile I hope he is the age they've said? Is he feeding ok? I'm no puppy expert though.

Nigglenaggle · 02/09/2012 20:00

I wouldnt disbelieve the age from those dimensions :) Whippet bedlington cross sounds lovely :)

P.S. What does pfb mean?

tennesseyhennessey · 02/09/2012 20:05

yes he seems to be feeding fine, we've got puppy pads and keep putting him on those, only one accident since he's been home (about 7 hours) . we have a lhasa x terrier ( rescued her at about 10 months old) who isnt too sure yet, not in a bad way. she's had a sniff and is now ignoring him & me!

he is gorgeous, all fluffy from his bedlington side with big dark blue eyes! pfb means precious first born.

going to take him to vets tomorrow to get checked over so fingers crossed!

Ah! Very good :)

multipoodles · 02/09/2012 21:12

Look at back teeth, they should have started to come through by 6-8 weeks, if not he is probably younger :( Front teeth appear by 3 weeks, they'll all be there by 8 weeks unless a very tiny toy breed that may be delayed by a week.

tennesseyhennessey · 02/09/2012 22:00

ive just had a feel around and he has teeth all the way round his mouth!

Hi there - I have a 13 year old bedlington x whippet lurcher snoring on the floor next to me. I got him at 8 weeks, but can't remember how big he was all those years ago.

He is a bit 'shorter' than a whippet though.

Congratulations on your new puppy!

CakeMeIAmYours · 03/09/2012 14:12

No real advice, but your pup sounds gorgeous - hope you have lots of happy years together Smile

TheGOLDCunnyFunt · 03/09/2012 16:57

Congrats on the new arrival! He sounds gorgeous! If you need any advice on the whippety part of him don't hesitate to pop over to here, the pointy hounds cushion! There's a few whippet owners who would be more than happy to point (arf!) you in the direction of some beautiful hound collar porn :o

TheGOLDCunnyFunt · 03/09/2012 16:59

Inc one owner who's whippy is still a puppy, he's not 1 till later this year so she may be able to tell you how small hers was at 8 weeks!

tennesseyhennessey · 04/09/2012 21:01

thank you for replies, will check out the hounds thread! took him to the vets who has estimated him at 6-7weeks. we feel awful but the vet said he could see he'd got a good home! he's also underweight so we need to feed him 3 x a day for the time being.
