Bicarb of soda and a stinky rug

We have a smelly old dog and I am somewhat obsessed now with trying to get the lounge dog-smell free.

We only have wooden or tiled floors downstairs and the dog has never been allowed upstairs on the carpets.

So I've done all the obvious stuff - washed the sofa covers and cushion covers, washed her bed (which we do frequently anyway), but it's clear that though she is not allowed to lie on the rug (and we rarely catch her lying on it), that smells of dog too.

The rug has got long threads so getting it professionally cleaned will probably cost as much as the rug did in the first place. I've ordered a load of bicarb of soda but it hasn't arrived yet as I've read that that works wonders with deodorising. Apparently I have to sprinkle it on and leave overnight then hoover up the next day. Has anyone tried it? Does it work? Confused

how much I have to put on. Is it full coverage so that you can't see any rug, or a light sprinkling like icing sugar on a cake?

Any help advise gratefully received!
