Do I phone the vet?

TeacakeDog had her stitches out two days ago (small gash on her leg) and has just managed to bite/lick/knock off one of the scans so it's now a bit open (about 3-4mm). Do I take her to the vet? Can I put any sort of antiseptic on it? She's usually good at leaving it but obviously did it when we were out. Grr!

Ok I'm not a dog but......

I recentlyish had surgery.

It became infected so leaked from the bottom of the wound (sorry for the tmi).

after I had all my stitches and clips out the bottom of the wound was still a little bit open. My GP just said that it would stay like that and heal itself like a scab. I put germolene on it and it is getting there now a little bit scabby.

I sound lovely don't I.

It will probably be the same for your dog.

Try the antiseptic and keep a VERY close eye on it for the next couple of days. Any worse and think vet. Not veterinary trained but lots of experience with dogs/animals.

I would be inclined to take her, depending what it looks like. You can always ring them and ask for advice. If it's come open a lot, it may need new stitches. Dogs can do a lot of damage by licking, but it's hard to say without seeing it. Whether you take her or not, it sounds like she still needs a cone on when you aren't there to supervise. I hope she's better soon.

Thank you! Can I use human antiseptic on it?

I have on my dogs and it's been fine. I will stress this is NOT veterinary advice...just experience Smile

Catsmamma · 26/07/2012 20:42

i'd just use salt water to bathe it, i know some are not good for cats!

Lonelylou · 26/07/2012 20:52

Thanks Catsmamma I didn't know that.

Savlon okay, Hibiscrub okay. TCP and germolene are irritant to animals so no. Salt water would be the best.
