Puppy photos (and advice please)

Hoping to lure you in with photos and then pick your brains please!

We got our Golden Retriever puppy on Saturday and took him to get vaccinated. Last night as I was rubbing him I noticed a large lump at the vaccination site. Called the vet today and he said its a common reaction to the vaccination and not to worry, there would only be cause for concern if it was oozing or if puppy was off colour. Well puppy is definitely not off colour, he's an eating drinking, playing little bundle of energy BUT I've just noticed 2 small "cuts" on the lump. I think he might have caused them through scratching but not sure.

Should we go back to the vet to double check?? Or wait and see. He's due back in 2 weeks anyway for more vaccinations.

I'd say keep a close eye on them and if there's any changes either to the vaccination site or in the puppy contact the vet again as a priority, by phone should be okay. Enjoy your new puppy :)

Thanks for the reply. Overnight the lump seems bigger and the sore spot is bigger as he's been scratching at it. We're going to go to the vet just so it can get cleaned properly. (His paws tend to be quite muddy so i'm a bit worried bout it getting infected)

There are some vets who post here, hopefully one will be by with some advice.

Well the "cut" and the lump seemed a bit bigger this morning so decided it was safest to go straight to the vet. Between calling the vet and getting there (took about 2 hours) the lump burst and was gushing pus by the time we got the vet. (Sorry tmi) It was an abscess. So he squeezed it to drain it further (he couldn't flush it as the hole wasn't big enough and he didn't want to enlarge it) and puppy is on antibiotics and pain killers. He (puppy) has to go back on Saturday to check on it.

Soooo glad I didn't wait. And my FIL is a complete Saint as he was driving me all over the place. (He'd offered to help any time when I was talking bout how
i was worried bout puppy, I'm lucky to have a family of animal lovers)

The vet isn't certain the abscess was caused by the vaccination as it actually wasn't the vaccination site but he's going to put the case to the vaccination company as it's not certain and hopefully they'll cover the cost of treatment! He hasn't charged my anything for now! Brilliant vet!

Keep an eye on your puppy - abscesses can make them really poorly. Daisydog3 had one recently at an injection site and she was really off colour with a high temperature.

We had to keep easing pus out of it as they tend to re-fill. Bathe with warm salty water too. Did the vet clear the site of hair?

I used manuka honey to finally heal it - but ours was a whopper - about the size of a grapefruit.

Shout if you have any questions, our abcess was called Brian and he is a bit famous at our vets practice ?
