Training a super food obsessed puppy

We have just got a rescued six month old puppy who hasn't been properly fed by her previous owners, which is why she was removed. Obviously we are feeding her and I hope that eventually she'll come to realise that the next meal will come.

She does know her name and 'out' and looks terrified if you say no, so I suspect that she's been shouted at or even worse.

Clearly when there's food around she goes crazy, jumping up and down and doing anything to get to it (no more eating on our laps). I've had a little go at teaching her 'sit' but she can smell a treat in my closed hand and goes into hyperdrive trying to get the treat. There's no way she'll sit even if I wait it out and hope she might. I'm not sure what the best approach is going to be with her. I thought the fact she'll do anything for food would be in my favour with regard to training, but I'm not sure what approach to take with her.

She's never been on a lead, so I'll be doing that soon and could do with some pointers for the best way ahead.

You could try to train "no mugging" first before you attempt anything else. This girl on you tube has excellent videos:

I did it with my pup (4 months), didn't take too long and all the other basics like sit, lie down, paw etc were a doddle. You'll get on well if she's food obsessed.

Good luck

Thanks Donner, I'll have a look. She's bright as a button so I think she should be easy to train.... Hopefully.
