Morning poo problems, but really don't want to go back to crate... any ideas?

We have a minitaure schnauzer who is 2 and a half. She had a crate as a puppy and up until this summer. Even as a puppy she never wet or soiled her bed. However although she was happy to gointo her crate at bedtime, it was never her bed of choice during the day, even though it's in a warm kitchen and right next to my desk where I often sit - she preferred her basket in the (open plan) sitting room next door.

This summer she was away from home, with us, for about 6 weeks so it was a change of scene and she slept in a basket, not a crate. The crate takes up a lot of room so I though it would be a good chance to put it away and just let her use her basket instead. But since then we have a wet floor at least once a week and a dirty floor once or twice a week which is staring to drive me nuts as I know she should be able to control herself!

If she goes into the garden late in the evening, she often just sits by the backdoor waiting to come back in again - how can I make her go to the loo then rather than on the floor later??!
