My 9 year old Bedlington Terrier, is a bit reluctant to go down stairs and jump into the car and is inclined to peer around in unfamiliar locations. I asked my vet to check his eyes when getting his jabs. He says it could be Progressive Retinal Atrophy, his retina is 'open'. He says there is no effective treatment and will eventually lead to blindness. This is backed up by the searches I have done on the net.
I can cope with that, there are plenty of happy blind dogs. I strongly believe in not putting animals through unnecessary, uncomfortable treatments.
Does anyone have any experience of a dog with PRA? Do you have any tips? Is it worth investigating carotene or lutein supplements? I would welcome your advice.
