Can anyone recommend a good 'dog grooming kit'?

We have a long-haired GSD with very thick bushy hair, even the pro-groomer at our local kennels gave up on trying to get through his hair and resorted to scissors.

DH wants to do it himself really, which I'm all for, and wants a kit for his birthday. The ones on Amazon look a bit 'designed for a poodle'ish but I know nothing about them.

Any tips/recommendations? TIA

My advice would be to buy a variety of different brushes and combs suitable for shephard coat rather than a generic kit which is mainly aimed at the pet market for brushing of smoother coated breeds.

A pin rake, shedding blade, combination comb and perhaps a coat king when shedding. Have a look here for range of good quality tools www.christiesdirect.com/Categories.aspx?CategoryID=123 Furminators are good but personally I prefer a coat king.

Not sure if I might have misled in my OP - as well as the brushes, combs etc. he also wants clippers that will get through his 'trousers' (as he calls them). This seems to be the main problem area and the one where the groomer resorted to scissors. Is a 'shedding blade' a type of clipper?

I'm afraid I don't know much about dogs Blush so apologies if I am using the wrong terminology.

To clip a GSD coat you will need professional dog clippers as anything else will not get through the coat, but I would not advice clipping a GSD coat if at all possible, but it's his choice. A coat king will remove a huge amount of under coat and will thin the trousers out for him, to start he may need to use a dematting tool but generally the coat king will reduce the coat. A shedding blade www.hyperdrug.co.uk/prodinfo.asp?number=SHEDBLADEL&Variation= removes dead hair, it's a long serrated blade that clips closed to pull through the coat. We used them on the horses too.

Good luck he sounds like a very hairy boy (dog not DH)
