Why is she eating her own poo?

she did it as a pup, then stopped at about 9 months. Now, aged nearly 5' has started again. Good balanced diet. Vet says she is in great shape. She is a big cross-breed. We also have a younger Westie who does not do it.

Any ideas why or how to stop most appreciated cos it's making me feel ill!

give your dog a banana or some pineapple each day in its food. Apparantly once digested and out the other end, whatever is in those foods make a stink that is unappetising to the dog.

hth. works for my boy, thankfully my girlie has never done this!

partystress · 23/05/2011 22:22

Thank you Coffee. Always have some bananas around. Will try tomorrow!

Our breeder said that our pup would do it a bit, and that she may be lacking in vitamin B2. She advised getting powdered yeast and putting that in her food. Worked a treat and hasn't needed the yeast or eaten any poo for months

I am a professional dog walker. Putting some pineapple (tinned will do) in their food every day has in my experience stopped it everytime

Batteryhuman · 25/05/2011 17:10

Because it tastes nice to her.

Choufleur · 25/05/2011 19:15

No idea but our darling dog specifically hunts out fox poo to eat - which fucking reeks!

Choufleur · 25/05/2011 19:16

I'm off to buy some yeast. Is it any old yeast or do I need to go to some sort of health food shop?

partystress · 25/05/2011 22:59

Ah, Choufleur. I feel your pain too. Forgot to mention that the Westie rolls in fox poo - it SO does reek! Adding yeast and pineapple chunks to the shopping list to solve one problem at least.

I think any old powdered yeast will do. She stopped eating it so quickly that we still have 3 quarters of the packet left.
